Just read issue #1 of Waid's DD.

Where the heck have I been! One issue in and I'm already in love, can't believe did't start this run sooner. I've loved the Bendis and Maleev run for so long (and I still do) that I guess I was afraid that it would ruin Daredevil for me but man I could not have been more wrong.

chongjasmine ask what to read besides Waids run, not where to start.

I hope to read some of the past daredevil's works, as soon as I have time.
I recently subscribed to marvel digital comics unlimted.
Hope to get some recommendation on which books in daredevil should I go after.
You picked a great character to get into. Many of Marvel's best storylines have been in Daredefil books by award winning writers and artists. Enjoy the ride and welcome to CBR.
Everything Miller and everything Bendis should make for plenty of awesome reading.

The Bendis run is classic stuff and Brubaker is almost as good.

    Taken together....

I don't remember ever genuinely being afraid for a character's mental health before.

Miller's stuff is great obviously, but Bendis took a superhero and turned him into a pulp crime fiction hero. To me this is a good thing.
But there are very few BAD runs of Daredevil. Y'know?

Something about the charactes makes writers and artists come with thier A game.

The reason I don't dig Waid's book isn't because it's "lame" or anything, but because to me, Bendis & Maleev's DD is the definitive one. I wish they'd have signed a lifetime contract on DD.
I agree completely. It may be the best run I've ever read period. If not it's up there. Though I enjoy Waid's run too.
Brubaker's run was pretty damn good too. That prison break sequence is legendary. I actually love all of Volume 2 with some exceptions here and there. It's what made me a huge Daredevil fan in the first place.

I think it's Miller that made DD pulp. And fearing for Matt's mental health? Read Millers run again, specifically the Elektra Saga and Born Again. Bendis run was great, but he stayed too long, some stuff, like Decalogue was just not up to par.

But true, there has been many great runs and stories. DD has been blessed with many good creators, and he's rarely been involved in many of these spectacle events Marvel does far too often. And that DD's always had ONE book might also be a factor.

Yeah, he's never been spread too thin. One title, one story at a time, very few crossovers.

I've been re-reading Bendis' run the last couple of days, and damn, those are some amazing comics. DD carving the bullseye into Bullseye's forehead is still one of the biggest Holy Shit moments of all time.

This thread needs more mention of Frank & Bill's Love and War graphic novel. Not the most Daredevil focused story, but an amazing book with Daredevil in it. Definitely worth checking out.

My favourite run is Ann Nocenti's, perhaps because it was the first one I read. She introduced Typhoid Mary and continued what Miller started with Kingpin destroying Matt's personal life; in my opinion she picked up a good idea and vastly improved it, with the Kingpin trying to turn Foggy into a corrupt lawyer, using Mary to destroy Matt's relationship with Karen Page, trying to destroy his belief in justice and the legal system. The story with Mephisto isn't much to my liking, but Nocenti went out with my favourite Daredevil/Bullseye battle, and the last page of the final issue was heartbreaking and a much needed catharsis for the reader:

    (Daredevil #290)

    (Daredevil #291)

It was also good to read Chichester finally writing the Kingpin's downfall, that was a great coda to the storyline Miller started years before in Born Again. Even so, I'm not a huge fan of his run, the art was weird and I never liked the armour. It was all too much '90s for me.

Frank Miller also had a powerful run and I like it very much. I also have a spot in my heart for Dennis O'Neill's run which had the inglorious task of following it. I liked villains like the Celt and Micah Syn. I've read and enjoyed Waid's run but I think a lot of the praise it gets is less about the writing's genuine merits and more the sense of relief about the series finally becoming fun again, after decades of darkness. I don't think it's a strong run or even essential, but it's enjoyable.

I didn't read Bendis' run and don't care about it; I made the mistake of reading some Brubaker issues, and again they cemented a) my lack of interest in Brubaker; b) my conviction that he's a mediocre writer, and c) my perplexity about his being touted as a great writer by everyone.

    Waid is perfect.
I just love Daredevil since he took over.

I like dark heroes, but especially Miller really overdid the whole tortured avenger thing to such an extend that I could only yawn at some point.
    Matt deserves some lightheartness too!
I mean, this is who he was originally.
I really hope he stays that way.
You are missing the prime Avengers fan rule, Torture and Genocide are OK if Cap approves, Feeding the Starving is evil if Cap doesn't aprove.
