Default Sketch Variants, Do you really like them?

It seems like DC puts out sketch variants for almost all their better selling series for each issue. Do you guys really like them?

I personally do not because I like when they are actually colored. Also for the price I definitely do not think its worth it. I prefer variant covers that are more unique like from different artist.

What are your opinions and if you do like it why do you? why do you think its worth it?

Those who don't like variants period do not need to comment.

depends on the artist; i find some sketch variants to be too bland without colouring.

I don't mind them if that's all they have on the comic rack and as long as it's regular priced.

    I think they are fine.

I like them, but I get all my monthlies digitally, so I get all the variant covers automatically. I like comparing the pencils to the inks with colors, but I also like the black-and-white ink covers. If I got my monthlies from a shop (something I've never done, BTW), I would consider asking for just the sketch variants of some titles if the store would do that, but I wouldn't pay extra for it. I wouldn't like mixing regular and sketch covers in a single series if I was collecting monthlies, but I'd get over it if it happened. I usually don't care for other variants, but having them mixed in with regular covers wouldn't bother me if I was collecting because you couldn't tell just by glancing at them.

I prefer to buy varients, but only when they are in color and they dont cost extra. I think charging more for the same book with a different cover is a buch of BS. Scetch covers just look unfinished and boring to me.

exactly how i feel about sketch variants. From what i notice all stores charge at least $6+ for a sketch variant and some stories will just charge cover price for regular variant.

It doesnt make sense to me, your practically getting the same cover but unfinished for more money

I was big on getting ANY type of variants on book I was buying, but lately started just getting variants that were done by different artists and in color. Buying variants to be a completist is a commitment, and after almost 20 years of collecting, I'm kind of over it.

Also, when it comes to the pricing, you have to realize that when it comes to variants you're not paying extra for the product. You're still paying $2.99 or $3.99 or $4.99, etc. The markup you're paying is for it's RARITY in publication RATIO.

yes of course but at the same time, if they only made 500 iPads or iPhones that didnt have a camera but called them Limited End of the World editions and cost more than a regular iPad or iPhone would you buy it. That my way of thinking for sketch variants.

or maybe a better example is if they sold a BMW limited edition paint-less model for more. has all the same features but hasnt been painted.

Well I know a normal newsstand would hardly have them but sometimes a comic book store will have them alongside the normal version before going for a higher price weeks later.

No. I don't like them. I'm not a fan of variants in general. Seems like a well worn idea that has been over-used to hype books that are really weak content wise.

$50-$200 is absurd, especially when it will just be reprinted in trade. Unless you're a specific collector it's just a cash burn.

I like seeing the sketches but not on the cover. If they want to show them in the interiors, sure, that's great.
