Something else to hate about the Morrison run.

Good ideas for the first half of it, but Planet X and Here Comes Tomorrow were awful. No amount of fame, renown, or other good work he's done is going to change my mind on that.

Honestly, I don't think there's anything in the story which suggests that they CANNOT go back! I really don't know how the OP is assuming that on the basis of a single word...

To my mind, the alternate timeline thing makes the most sense. If they were from the 616 timeline, the very act of removing them from the past should have erased the future selves and catastrophically damaged the present day MU. Alternatively, it would imply that the future selves are having their memories rewritten as we speak (ala 'Looper')...and that history is actively being altered in some way.

Incidentally, I'm also not sure when the precedent in the MU was established that time travel 'normally' creates a parallel timeline/universe. Because, the earliest use of time travel in the MU canonically, which was the FF using Doom's time platform in FF # 5, involved the Fantastic Four going back to recover the treasure of the legendary pirate Blackbeard only to discover that Ben himself was Blackbeard all along! That implies more of a 'stable time loop' scenario as opposed to 'parallel universes/alternate timelines'...

I don't get the premise of this thread...Since when has time travel not been part of the X-Men reality?

Cable? Bishop? Days of Future Past anyone??? And many many more...

Time travel in the X-franchise generally create alternate, diverging timelines. Not always. Forward travel reaches a random future, past travel creates a divergence. You can travel back freely if you started from the past. If you go to the past, then potentially your own timeline could be affected. All is inconsistent.

He jumped sideways through reality and got a time cube from the early Legion of Super-Heroes. (Beast might even be responsible for messing up the LoSH timeline, once we think about it).

Oh, Hank, you should have stuck to biochemistry.
