Default The Avengers Movie and Ultimates reference (Spoilers)

The Avengers Bluray for me was so good I am just now finally getting around to watching the directors commentary and had a total geek out moment.

I am not sure if this was already mentioned in another thread or category or is already common knowledge but I am still so giddy that I wanted to share the little Ultimates nugget from Joss Whedon (which I suspect will be lost on a lot of the mainstream viewers).

During the “Man Down” scene after Coulson’s apparent death, Cap is standing on a catwalk with Tony in his armor below. Whedon makes the following comment:

“…it looks like Bryan Hitch drew it. Nothing looks more like the Ultimates than that one shot”.

    I fell off my couch

For me at least it is definitive confirmation, of what we already knew was, the Avengers cinematic universe is based on the Ultimates Universe.

Just f’n cool and I appreciate the nod from Joss.

Again, if I am late to the party and this is already common knowledge please let this thread melt into obscurity…i just had to geek-up all over the floor and figure no one here would mind the mess.

I don't normally listed to commentary, so I wouldn't have caught this. It was apparent that many elements in the marvel Cinematic Universe are based on the Ultimate Universe, but it is very nice to know that Joss is actually striving to work Ultimate elements in. I think the Cinematic Universe is a healthy amalgamation of the UU and 616, but obviously I would prefer it be based entirely off of the UU. Can you imagine Ultimate Iron Man and Ultimate Thor on the Big Screen? I still pray that Thor gets his Ultimate Harness in one of the future movies, at least if only for a scene or as an easter egg.

The characters are more 616 than Ultimate, but the world itself is more Ultimate than 616.

    Does that make sense?

Yes - Iron Man and Cap are pure 616(as they were) Hawkeye and Widow are more like their Ultimate versions and Tom Hiddleston is the spitting image of Ultimate Loki ( who we didn't see enough of in the comics) . Thor and Hulk could belong to either universe while Fury is 100% Ultimate!

Robert Downey Junior is Ultimate Iron Man. 616 Iron Man is Robert Downey Junior nowdays.

Captain America - Attitude 616, backgroundstory Ultimate, abilities mixture

Iron Man - 616, but the whole *coming death* thing was clearly an inspiration from Ultimate.

Black Widow - 616. Why ultimate? She is not an evil spy ; )

Hulk - 616, thankfuly. Don't ever wanna see a horny cannibal on big screen o.O Only exception is that he is willing to kill. And his backgroundstory, with the super-soldier thing is from Ultimate.

Thor - 616, also thankfuly. Hate this whole hippie and powersuit-thing. Only his helmet is missing....

Loki - 616. Movie Loki is no complete monster, unlike Ultimate.

    Nick Fury- Clearly ultimate.

Hawkeye - Ultimate, both costume and personality-wise.

Bull. I'll take a specialist military man over a cornball showoff with an entirely ridiculous choice of weapon any day.

Oh, and when I was first into comics (~4 years ago), I thought his classic costume sucked. Didn't wanna read anything with him in it. My opinion has softened as I've gotten more into comics, but Marvel made the smart move all around appealing to new patrons.
Marriage Era Spidey bashers are shameful opportunists (Like you REALLY didn't enjoy a single Spidey comic in 20 years)
Conversely, BND haters REALLY need to get over their continuity elitism already

But thankfuly, they left out his *turn everything into a weapon* shit.
That never really fit, it should be Bullseyes ability alone.

And now that you said that, watch it be incorporated into Avengers 2. Hell 616 Hawkeye can apparently do that now too based on the AvX New Avengers tie-in.
Holding out for a Peter/Miles team up.

Like Taylor 51 I was never even a fan of 616 Hawkeye (mostly because of the costume) until Millar's and Hitch's Ultimate incarnation of the character. I was already digging the black ops version but then fingernail moment during his interrogation in Ultimates 2 moved him to one of my all time favorite characters.

Even the new Hawkeye series in 616 is very well written and the art style is a nice change.

I listened to the commentary but I must have missed that. Thanks, I'll go back and listen to it again. Only that part though. I didn't know how much of an ego problem Joss had on him until I listen to that commentary.

I have to agree. I've been reading comics since 89 and I've NEVER liked Hawkeye and mainly because of his old costume. The Ultimates and the new 616 suit kicks ass and adds a lot to the character, imo. I would say the same for Cap. I don't know why they don't get rid of those stupid looking wings on his head like they did in Ultimates.

I agree. While Ultimates 1 and 2 are some of my top 5 fav comics of all time I thought the way Hawkeye killed everyone with his finger nails was lame and not believable at all.

Huh? It's been awhile since I listened to the commentary, but I didn't think Joss had an ego problem whatsoever.
