It may be blasphemy, but I prefer Dunkin Donuts to Krispy Kreme. Krispy Kreme taste good going down, but five minutes later I usually regret eating them. They are just a little too greasy/fatty for me.

Of course, I live in New England, where there's a Dunkin Donuts on every street corner -- sometimes two -- so I am certainly biased.

I haven't had donuts in ages but I remember years ago I used to eat these delicious chocolate covered donuts. The chocolate was so soft and yummy and the donut so light and fluffy.

I attempted some repairs around the house earlier and well, it didn't go too well. Growing up without a Dad, I didn't really learn a lot of things boys do. So when it comes to using tools and other machinery its all a bit bewildering. Very hit and miss. And in this case, it was definitely miss and I messed up a cupboard.

Remember when Krispy Kreme "invaded" a few years ago, thinking hey were going to take new England away from Dunkin Donuts?

Their doughnuts were wa-a-ay overrated; they were gone quicker than you can say "blue state."

The only donut place near me is The Donut Cooperative, which is, you know, a cooperatively-run bakery and coffee shop. They make your traditional donuts, but they also have flavors like chai spice and black licorice. They also do vegan and gluten-free donuts. Good stuff. They're on my way to work, but they're usually closed by the time I walk by since I'm on swing shift. When I go to volunteer once a week, though, I almost always stop there.

You'd get a kick out of the balti chicken I mentioned earlier. I didn't get to cook it because I still need to get some ingredients, but I hope to cook some this weekend. It is one of my favorite dishes.

Tonight I cooked some general tso's chicken and topped it over some delicious jasmine rice. It's fairly easy compared to most asian recipies. I really like asian cooking but the only drawback is that they are quite time consuming and require ingredients one doesn't find at a regular grocery store. We have an asian market fairly close to us that I try to frequent. I need to make a visit again. It's been a long time since I cooked and need to get more prepared.

Jasmine rice is one of my favorite things to eat. I am a total carb-a-holic. And a starch lover.

Edit: Damn I forgot to get some sake!

Man I remember when Krispy Kreme opened in my corner of CT when I lived there. There were lines an hour long to get into the parking lot, which was amusing since I saw people getting out of their cars while in line, running into one of the three Dunkin' Donuts on that street and grabbing a coffee to drink while they were waiting. Now I have been in Ohio about 9 1/2 years and I don't know if Krispy Kremes are still going in CT. Here, you can get Krispy Kreme in just about every grocery store and Speedway (gas chain/convenience store), but I have to drive 35 minutes to go to the closest Dunkin. Man I miss Dunkin, I used to get coffee there every day on my way in to school when I was teaching, and I still find myself contemplating the trip to the closest one when I am really craving Dunkin coffee. I picked some up at themarket to make at home, but it's just not the same....

All this talk about donuts is making me hungry! As such I devoured a packet of chocolate chip biscuits tonight. Definitely not good for my weight which tends to go up and down like a yo-yo.

As the end of 2012 inches ever closer, I was reflecting on my purchases for the past year and I'm happy to say that ebay didn't factor into many of them (unlike previous years). I love the Internet, and the ease it affords in making choices for yourself, but in some ways Internet shopping is made almost too easy, too tempting, and in previous years I over-indulged more than I intended to. Once I really took a cold hard look at what I was spending I decided that was no longer the path I wanted to go down and I made some choices to better my finances and life. Overall, I don't purchase even a fraction as much these days online. And I definitely feel better for it.

The small Arkansas town where I went to college, Magnolia, is the home of what appears to be one of the last few remaining examples of what a bit of research has informed me used to be a fairly widespread chain of donut places -- Spudnuts. The name comes from the fact that they use potato-based flour. I never tried them while I lived there, for some reason, but the last couple of times I was there in December while they were open (I guess it's family owned, & as often as not they've taken the weekend in question off, & for that matter I don't think they're open Sundays, anyway) I availed myself of their fare. Pretty darned good -- I guess because of the flour content, the donuts, cinnamon rolls, etc. are a bit more substantial than most place's offerings.

Dunno how they perform commercially, but they've been there forever, so I suppose sales are satisfactory. In a town of 10,000 or so, plus around 3,000 college students (when I was there it was more like 1,800), they don't have any competition, though once upon a time there was a pretty darned good Southern Maid place a couple of blocks from campus (whereas Spudnuts is maybe 4 miles away, in what passes for Magnolia's business district).

Last I looked, there was one in the next county seat over, too. Sometimes, I guess, Arkansans are slow to give up on a good thing.

I tend to split superhero comics fans into "People who like Krypto" and "People who don't like Krypto."
Basically, if you miss the wonder of a dog flying around in a little Superman cape, you're in the wrong hobby.

Have the opportunity to visit the bookstores this weekend. Not sure if I will be going or not at this point as my health is up and down. Ideally I'd like to fit in two trips before Xmas but I have conflicting thoughts because I think well if I do go this weekend, what if its the last visit of the year and then just before Xmas they get in even more stock? The upside is that I can buy silver age thru to 2012 comics for a dollar or less at the bookstores. Sure beats paying $4-$16 bucks an issue like I see people do online.

When Krispy Kreme expanded to the northeast, they opened a store here in Manhattan on my block. It was my habit to get a table in the back, have my coffee and creme-filled donuts, and watch the freshly baked donuts travel via conveyer belt to be glazed, doused in chocalate or injected with custard. Sorry to see it close up. At least that location is now a Chipolte Mexican Grill. And you watch them make your meal via an assembly line.

Donuts are okay but ice cream - yummy. I remember as a kid there was the local ice cream truck and it made the best ice cream. Just cold enough without freezing the insides of your mouth, and nice swirls piled up high on the cone. It was so yummy. Sometimes I would get a choc coated ice cream and other times multi-colored sparkles spread all over the vanilla ice cream. I think that was the first time I had a milk shake and thick shake too.

Got rid of that cupboard I accidentally damaged. Was going to take it to the rubbish tip but it was suggested to me to put it on the front lawn and sure enough somebody took it which is a win-win either way you look at it because it saves an extra trip and my loss is someone else's gain.
