I might not even own a comic with work by any of them, let alone a cover.

I thought the same. Nothing wrong with Kirby covers at all.

Had to vote for Bolland, even though every name on that list belongs there. (I don't like Hughes' art much, but it certainly has had an impact.) The choice ultimately came down to Bolland and Steranko for me, and I ended up choosing Bolland for two reasons: 1) the sheer amount of his work compared to Steranko's small (yet monumentally influencial) output; 2) a Bolland cover suggests a certain type of challenging book I like to read (The Invisibles, Animal Man, even the current Dial H series). I can't remember exactly who once referred to Bolland as "the Norman Rockwell of the deranged" (I think it was Grant Morrison, Peter Milligan, or Dean Motter), but that's feeling I get from a Bolland cover. When I see a Bolland cover, I will at least pick up and flip through the book, searching for an unusual sensibility that most comics don't have. I can't say that about too many other cover artists.

(Of the newest guys, it's definitely Jock and Skottie Young for me.)

    No Jack Kirby?
    No Steve Ditko?
    No Walt Kelly?
    No Harvey Kurtzman?

This is the sort of thing that makes me think that comic fans are idiots. I know you're NOT, but jeezus, guys, get a fucking clue.

    Aloha,

You might as well ask "favorite artist," period, & then give 13 possible choices.

Certain people on that list I like (even) better for their covers than their work in general (Kubert & Infantino, for instance, both of whom would probably make my list of top five covers artists but not my list of, oh, 25 favorite artists otherwise), but in general this just won't work for most of us, as several responses have already shown.

    So it goes.
I tend to split superhero comics fans into "People who like Krypto" and "People who don't like Krypto."

    Bolland.

And that list could also have really used Dave Johnson.

Aaaaaand whoever had #12 as his choice in the "number of posts it takes for someone to mention an artist Dan Bailey has never heard" wins the jackpot!

From checking the GCD, looks like he's done some covers I own & quite like, with Uncle Sam & the Freedom Fighters from a couple of years ago being immediately obvious. I blame his horribly boring name; surely he could make up some silly-ass moniker up out of whole cloth, like "Frank Quitely" or I'm-so-cool-I-go-by-only-one-name "Jock".
