This is awkward. I love the book but I think I'd love it more if it kept away from the DCU history stuff, especially the stuff showing up in the present day (Court of Owls, black diamond, etc.). Part of the charm of the last series was the way it more or less stood on its own.
I have been a fan of DC's western characters since the days of Jonah in Weird Western Tales.
And I will say that this could be my favorite DC series now being published. Period.
I like the revival of characters like Bat Lash, Cinnamon, Nighthawk, etc. And I don't mind using some of DC's established history and including it in ASW.
Shoot, I wouldn't mind seeing some sort of appearance by characters that are known to be 'eternal' like Ras Al Ghul and others.
"the book being set, for now, in Gotham City" -- I apologize if I seem to harp on this, but part of the reason I've enjoyed Jonah Hex, a large part, if not equal to Jonah's character and history, is the setting: the Old West, the plains, the mountains, the deserts. Dare I hope that someday (soon!?) G & P will return Jonah to these parts ("the book being set, for now, in Gotham City")? And, too, one of the (many) things which set JH apart was the done-in-one stories, many of which pack a punch even on multiple rereading due in part to the self-containment of a one-issue story. I'm...pardon...ah'm as tarred a Gotham Cesspool as Jonah (who--is it EVERY issue?--complains, 'I hate this city."). Arkham reads to me as a whiny, basically useless character and I'd be happy to leave him behind as well. An important part of JH, at least certainly for me, is that what happens in his stories continues to affect his life throughout the years. I doubt very much that much of anything we've come across in ASW will be anything but of minor importance to the JH legend in years to come. And all the DC-history, so-called? How often as that undergone 'revision'; think you what's happened here will be of much lasting importance? Get thee outta Gotham Jonah Hex. Please.
