Default CBR REVIEW: Thor: God of Thunder #2

"Thor: God of Thunder #2" by Jason Aason and Esad Ribic brings the hammer down on the tale of Thor's first encounter with the God Butcher.

It's well written, but I'm still finding it a bit dull.

I think this is going to be my new "Swamp Thing". Technically well done, critically lauded, but for whatever reason it isn't quite there yet. In fact, this even reminded me of Snyder's writing style, with the internal monologue describing some personal historical anecdote that relates to the situation at hand.

I'll keep reading because I AM enjoying it, just as I enjoy Swamp Thing, but I wish I could be as 'on board' as many are.

The God Butcher is awesome for sure, but I'm a little thrown off by his...nakedness. But he looks and is terrifying. Great issue.

Awesome so far. Art was great and the story is really interesting.

For those that want to know, the name of Thor's axe, Järnbjörn, means Iron Bear.

    Just finished the issue.

    This is an excellent book.

Two issues in and it feels epic already.

I'm fully on board! It was even better than the first issue.
Loved that moment at the end of the fight against the God butcher: with Mjolnir or without it, he's the god of Thunder after all.

Btw, Juggernaut Punch, thanks for the information. I didn't find anything about it. :]

No problem. Like with Mjolnir (which is actually called Mjölner in the original languages), they didn't print the umlauts in the book, which makes it kinda hard to google. Luckily I'm Swedish, so its easy understand anyways :)

Epic is a good word to describe it.

Nice! Now I'm curious to see if the Iron Bear has any enchantments itself.

Best book so far to come out of Marvel Now. I hope Esad Ribic stays on for a long time.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Never had much interest in Thor in the past, but I just love this series and it's only two issues in! It has an epic fantasy to it which I just love, and Esad Ribic's art is a big part of that. He'd better stay for a long long long time!
Avengers Arena is one of the best books in the shops right now, it's seriously amazing.

I agree, about this issue at least. I felt it was a pretty big step down from the first.

I would've preferred to have actually seen the personal historical anecdote than simply have it told to us. The comics medium uses pictures for a reason, and it's not to have fight scenes with completely unrelated text next to them.

Additionally, writing the bulk of the book in a dense fog or in the clouds didn't really give the artist much to work with here. The latter half of the book is nothing but a series of Thor versus Gorr images, and it doesn't hold ones interest; particularly when the events being described would be more visually interesting than the fight taking place.

To be super anal about this, back in the Viking days it probably would have been "Jarnbjörn", as the first umlaut is a later invention.
