Default How to design a comic book room.

We have an extra room which is going to be a comic book room. I get to decorate and everything. I'm just trying to get some suggestions before I start this. I have 40+ longboxes. I'm hoping to get some sturdy shelves so I can stack them three high. Posters are kind of obvious. I was thinking of painting some things on the walls themselves or maybe some low art paintings. There aree cabinets in there now which I think I will take down and replace them with shelves. I was thinking of using purple as the main color.

    Any thoughts?

Sounds like a fun project. Maybe you could install some track lighting and aim the lighting at the posters. Buy a few of those comic statues or busts to put on display on shelves, either stand-alone or like ornamental bookends. Also, get a couple of comfy chairs or beanbags or a couch, and put them near a nice lamp for a reading area.

Skip the posters. Hang original art. Or, if you're super-crafty, get a black and white page image, put it on a transparency, get a projector, and make a big wall mural of something.

If you have the room, use file cabinets. The long boxes should be able to fit in and you can go four high with the cabinets, thus saving space. they are alot sturdier than the wooden or particle board cabinets and won't bow under the weight. They also provide a surface on top to display busts, statues and action figures. If and when the opportunity presents itself that's what I plan on doing. I'd also put in a curio to display some of the statues.

I recently removed my comics from longboxes and put them on shelves and I love it. I also liquidated most of my collection so right now I don't know how many longboxes worth of comics I fit on a shelf. 40 boxes is a big collection. Mine was 22 boxes at it's peak, and that was too much for me to deal with. Maybe those drawer short boxes would have made things easier. I think having the collection quick and easy to access should be top priority, and then a comfortable reading spot.

The Robot6 blog on the main CBR page has a Saturday feature called Shelf Porn Saturdays, which if you haven't seen it, features photo tours of various comic book rooms that readers have sent in. Some of them are simply mind blowing. You might want to check them out if you haven't already for some inspiration and tips.

You've forgotten about seating. Seating would be key.

Agreed, original art with quality framing would make the room more classy and sophisticated. I'd also think about putting a desk or table in the room so you have somewhere to lay down your comics while you're rifling through your boxes looking for or sorting stuff.

Unless it's a poster that is rare and of a quality to be framed. I found an old Shadowrun poster from the 90's in mint condition for $1.00 once and I can't believe a lot of them are around, and the paper it is printed on is very high quality. Now, a Green Lantern or Superman poster anybody can get, yes, skip.
