Pretty sure that Marvel and Slott are going to keep a eye on it.

It'll make a lot of money, but none of it will come from me.

Yes, but do we as readers really care? I know I don't. I want good Spidey stories. That's it.

Readers might not care, but it would have consequences for them. It helps ensure that there's a market for good Spidey stories, so it's good for retailers. When Marvel is able to pay their talent, that should improve the quality of the work. It's quite bad for the industry if many artists and writers decide that they can't make a living with comics.

We still have books with 13 variant covers. They just aren't shiny.

Of course. I understand that too. But since #700 will have many variant covers, how much they make might only encourage Marvel to have more variant covers, which I'm not for at all.

It'll make around $7.99 per customer.

In the grand scheme of things, since Marvel=Disney, whatever ASM #700 brings in is like spitting in the ocean. They could give away 350k issues and it wouldn't make a difference.
