He's a gay, Latino, über-sterotype that was poorly handled and was more the butt of jokes than someone to be a good example.

Doesn't mean he can't be made better. After all, they're trying that with Vibe.

Also, I don't think every gay character in comics HAS to be butch and straight-acting™ like Apollo, Midnighter, Josiah Power etc. Some of my gay friends ARE very over the top, and I don't see why they should not get some kind of representation, too. And when you give a character who is very flamboyant a three-dimensional personality, he stops being a stereotype.

    Hah. I agree so much.

It annoys me when people when looking for a gay character are looking for one where you have to actually question that he's gay or he has to be "a straight guy who's into dudes". Like what? People get the idea that a feminine man has to be an overly catty and shallow person. They can still be people with personalities, quirks, and etc. They're just men who are effeminate. Femininity is something that DC is definitely missing out on a lot anyways, they won't even let their women be feminine. People really should realize that expecting every gay character in media to be a masculine, white male isn't a good thing at all. People are mixing up feminine gay men with subservient gay men who only live to please their straight female "shopping buddy" masters which I think is a really hard niche to fill in a comic anyways.

The best representation of gay people in media is where there is variety.

That's great, I agree, the more variety the better, but when Extraño came out he was at the time the only gay character DC was putting out there, and he was fueled by some pretty extreme blatant cliches and stereotypes as subtle as a freakin hammer. It's honestly hard to tell if it was parody or a desperate attempt at character. Not to mention the name not so subtly suggesting strange/odd/weird/queer etc.

Obviously they had to start somewhere, similar to to the 70's exploitation era, when ethnic characters outrageously always having to mention or announce their race! Constantly wearing it on their sleeves or in their Names. Announcing it was the most important thing about them.

    (thread asks for pics)

Who knows, maybe now that there is in fact some more variety of gay characters, and Extraño is not the only representative out there, someone will find a way to use him and want to bring him back for the Dark line?

If even Vibe can find a champion in Geoff Johns, maybe there's someone there waiting to bring back Extraño.

Who knows, maybe he'll form part of Guillermo Del Toro’s Dark Universe...
