None are better than the Paul Smith issues of Uncanny X-Men, 165 to 175. From the Ashes has most of the issues minus 165, 166, and 167 as they are the end of the Brood saga but you need them to fully appriciate 168.

I own From the Ashes and the originals but if Marvel were to ever release a Paul Smith Visionairies, I would totally buy that.

Agreed. The Paul Smith glory days in the early 80s on Uncanny, followed by JR JR. Those are the arcs I look back on the most fondly.

Worst? Whedon's Astonishing, Ellis' Astonishing, Necrosha, and 90% of the 90s.

    In roughly chronological order:

Claremont's entire 1975-1991 run. Highlights are:

    The Phoenix Saga (UXM #97-108)
    The World Tour/Proteus (UXM #111-128)
    The Dark Phoenix Saga
(Hell, just read everything from #97 up to #138!)

    Magik #1-4
    The Brood Saga
    From The Ashes
    Fall Of The Mutants
    The Outback Era
    Inferno
    The Phalanx Covenant
    Mutant Genesis (X-MEN #1-3)

    Post-1991:
    Operation: Zero Tolerance
The first three (Larocca-drawn) volumes of X-Treme X-Men
    MechaniX
    Gifted
    Torn
    Worlds Apart
    The Apocalypse Solution
    The Dark Angel Saga
PAD's X-Factor run (collecting it one TPB at a time)

And these are just my favorites. There's lots more I like a bunch but haven't listed here.

I have been rereading Essential X-Men Volume Four and it really is my favorite era of X-Men.

Going to buy those X-Men Classic issues of Paul Smith's like 67-76 (minus 75 and the ones I own already) next time I do a back issue order.

I REALLY liked Kieron's Uncanny, but I can't really pinpoint a story that I LOVED. His dialogue and characters were fresh but the plots never really grabbed me. He made INCREDIBLE (or at least greatly improved and usable) characters out of Cyclops, Colossus, and Magik.

    1. E is for Extinction
    2. Brian Wood's Ultimate Comics X-Men -- might be up here because its currently happening, but its amazing.
    3. Days of Future Past
    4. Supernovas
    5. Mutant Massacre
    6. The Longest Night (X-Factor vol. 3) (or TBH I loved the first 30 or so issues)
    7. Generation Hope (the title itself)
    8. Germ Free Generation (New X-Men)
    9. Age of X
    10. Fall of Avalon (X-Men)
    11. Blinded by the Light
    12. The Apocalypse Solution
    13. Joe Kelly's X-Men run
    14. Generation X #1-25
    15. Fall of the Mutants
    16. Pixie Strikes Back
    17. X-Factor #216-224

I'd go for Carey's run on Xmen - starting with issue 188

    Messiah Complex

    Or Whedon's Astonishing run :)
