The Chitauri attack begins but the Avengers are nowhere to be seen. Instead, a giant revolver rises out of a local pizza parlour and fires the pizza cats and the full rescue squad into action. The Supreme Catatonic is also dispatched and the cats get their flight suits. They get the same information from their headquarters that the Avengers got, so they'll know about the tesseract as well as the nuke when it gets launched.
How do things go?
