Default Quentin Quire (Wolverine) and the X-Men #21 SPOILERS!

After last week’s excellent issue featuring Hippy Angel, Mystique, and the introduction of Sharktits, WaTXM shifts gears yet again with issue 21 and heads right back into wacky Mad Magazine style silliness. Frankenstein’s Monster’s murder circus has come to town and hypnotized the older X-Men into becoming freak-show performers so to draw in a crowd whose life essences are drained out by the circus ghouls. Or at least that's the plot that I was able to discern...

Meanwhile, Quire and the rest of the babysitter’s club find themselves at a seemingly abandoned Jean Grey School. Mercury gets a little screen-time, Eyeball Boy and Sharktits meet, and Rockside is sporting a neat new uniform.
The kids wonder off and find themselves at the circus, dumbfounded to see their teachers as performers. Rather than merely hypnotizing the X-kids themselves, Frankenstien’s ghoulies have the older X-Men attack them - choas ensues!

Elsewhere, Young Baron Frankenstein of the Hellfire Brats takes a break from trying to recruit Idie and heads into the circus to buy a corndog (what a twist!). There he meets his great grandfather’s creation and the issue ends on a double cliffhanger.

Also, Mudbug makes another appearance and gets one more line of dialogue than I thought he would…

Great homage to the classic Uncanny X-Men story where Mesmero drafts the X-Men into a circus.

Has Rockslide ditched his old gang to hang out with the new kids trying to get some screentime? He's been mentioned more lately.

Rockslide is the embodiment of immature jokes. It was only a matter of time.

What is it now, two or three good issues in a row ? Maybe all hope isn't lost for this book. Liked the art, didn't mind the simplistic plot (everyone randomly decides to go to the circus) and am curious about the Hellfire kids scheme. My main complaint is that some of the characters really need to step up their games. Looking at you, Quentin. Really you'd think witnessing the events of AvX and everything that followed would inspire the character to actually do something revolutionary and not just skip classes or wear stupid shirts. And don't get me started on how stupid Idie sounded. "Me don't understand, why was my friend at your church and why was he killed and omg you hate mutants and you hate the school but I like them now bye". Like, wtf ? She needs to get a brain and fast.

This was the perfect story for Bradshaw's art. The circus redesigns were amazing (especially Warbird). Rockslide is one of the few characters from the Academy X era that I actually like, so I appreciated his inclusion here. I really like his new uniform too. Shark Girl is great, but there was a disappointing lack of Jia Jing. Not thrilled with the direction Aaron seems to have planned for Idie. Did anyone else spot Valeria Kementari in this issue?

A bemused Storm awakening into a new existence by casting off the shackles of marriage was a particularly brilliant moment.

I love that Jia Jing's already shunted to her natural state as bland wallpaper. There's hope for Aaron yet.
