Rising Again
A knock at the door disturbs newlyweds Jamie and Layla Madrox the morning after their wedding night. Rather than a murderous Vanora, the couple are greeted by detectives from the Las Vegas Police Department. The Abraham Lincoln impersonator who married the couple has been found decapitated, and the police could use the supernatural insight of X-Factor Investigations. Layla discovers that their minister is but one of several civil war figures to have suffered the same headless fate in the last two weeks. Tempted by the prospect of a Highlander-like case, the couple agree to help out in an unofficial capacity.
Surveying the crime scene, Layla uncovers a piece of decaying flesh, and using a locator spell, traces its origin to a convention centre hosting a civil war re-enactment. Jamie is sent to investigate further while Layla trips up over herself and into a brief concussion. Backstage at the venue, Jamie uncovers a bloodbath: countless bodies lie bleeding to death, at the hand of the re-animated corpse of General Robert E. Lee, outraged to see men and women treat the depravity of war as a game. Jamie and his dupes attack Lee, and on realising that his assailant is a mutant, the zombie decries mutantkind's lack of respect for death. There's a reference to how terrible Necrosha was. The fight finds its way on stage, and Jamie eventually destroys Lee, burning him in an electrical fire. Lee appears grateful, and with his dying words, warns of the forthcoming Hell on Earth War.
Jamie returns to Layla, and the two re-consummate their marriage. Assisted by a dupe.
My thoughts
"I'd rather make a mistake with you than play it safe with anyone else," was a really nice line, but this wasn't anything special. Filler for the transition from Breaking Points to the Hell on Earth War.
