Default Geoff Johns & "Justice League" Reach Aquaman's "Throne Of Atlantis"

Under writer Geoff Johns, two of DC Comics best-selling franchises are about to go to war with an underwater nation, and the CCO explains how "Aquaman" and "Justice League" both stand to change from Ocean Master's "Throne of Atlantis."

Now that Ivan Reis is on "Justice League," I'm a bit more optimistic. I do not think Jim Lee's art elevated Johns' script at all. I also don't think it's been Johns' best work.

I understand what he is trying to do with the team. But if they've been established for five years it is weird that none of these trust issues bubbled up sooner.

That said, I'm kind of excited for "Throne of Atlantis." If anything I think this is where the book is going to cement itself. Plus, Paul Pelletier coming on board for Aquaman.

I've been mostly reading Justice League in the store (I'm trade waiting the softcovers), so this arc will be the first time I start buying. Hopefully, this arc will be awesome.

I was talking about Ocean Master. I've read Aquaman, almost every iteration of the character. Johns writing a good book, but it's not groundbreaking, nor is it the best he's ever been. The art is giving a lot to this book, and rightly so. Reis has been fantastic on it.

    Nice.

Yeah, Johns' approach pretty much works for any character. It's hardly revolutionary, but sometimes treating a character normally and telling standard stories with their big name allies and enemies, without needing to put some kind of crazy new stamp on them is revolutionary from comics that often have writers far too willing to change things for a flash-in-the-pan bit of interest, instead of taking the existing elements seriously and treating them as such.

Reis/Prado on art is why Aquaman is the best he's been in 50 years. I think they could elevate the most bare-bones of stories into something wonderful. I'm glad the switch to Justice is done in such a way that he's not technically "off Aquaman" in a sense.

So far digging the Ocean Master ideas; every little tweak to Aquaman's backstory made over his history kind of messed up the timeline for Ocean Master's history so Johns incredibly streamlined revisionist history is already off to a better start for Ocean Master than I think even his First Appearance in the 60s had going for it.

Aquaman is the best thing that Johns is doing... Justice League is pointless and predictable, and GL is becoming boring and repetitive.

    oh Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the other side of the coin, there has been no shortage of plotlines in "Justice League" from Superman and Wonder Woman's relationship to Cyborg's status as a hero to the gap left by Green Lantern's quitting the team. How does this war with Atlantis impact those developments?

You'll see a lot more on those. Superman and Wonder Woman are central to issue #15, and their plotline is at the very top of the issue. That character relationship, where its going and how it will evolve is central to this story. Cyborg actually sees his biggest role to date in this storyline, strangely enough. We'll see the evolution of where he's going. And also Batman and Aquaman have this relationship where their working partnership develops throughout this storyline. The whole team comes to a realization through this story about what the Justice League really needs to be and how to help one another, they have to create a team as strong as the world requires. If the first year was about world building, the second year is about embracing that theme of "World's Greatest Heroes." They've got to become those and be those. And that will include opening the ranks.

I'm actually looking forward to this. JL has been sucking but making the series Aquaman and Friends will probably make it better due to how superior Aquaman is.

Has it been confirmed that Johns is NOT leaving Aquaman after this arc?

Other than drawing that conclusion from Pelletier's previous comments about wanting to work with him.

By doing that, we wanted to do character-driven, epic stories – the biggest stories we could possibly tell with the League. And the very first one of those is "Throne of Atlantis."
I think Johns should just stick to plot-driven, because his character work isn't subtle enough to drive this book, but "biggest stories we could possibly tell with the League" does sound good. At this point, I want to drop this book after Throne of Atlantis, but we'll see. Hopefully Reis improves the hell out of this one.

Either DC or Johns himself first leaked the confirmation to AquamanShrine.com, then it was confirmed by CBR a week or 2 later.
