    Default Best Casual Scenes

Artists or writers. Who does the best casual scenes.

Fight scenes are a superhero writer or penciler's bread and butter, and a good dramatic argument or atmospheric horror bit are things most professional superhero handlers can do. But casual scenes, sitting at the breakfast table, or lounging on the sofa in front of the TV scenes take, in superhero comics, a special writer or artist to pull off and keep them interesting without trying to turn them into action sequences.

A third or more of Hitman is guys sitting on barstools and it was awesome. Warren Ellis would do a chilling in a hotel room scene or a let's go to the bar story in Stormwatch and it was intriguing even if it didn't explode into violence or move "the plot" along. Duncan Fegredo can draw two people lying on the sheets together like nobody's business. Some of my favorite Superman moments are just Clark and Jimmy talking or Lois and Clark flirting.

Who does'em best and where (and, naturally, why)?

Right now, I would say Jeff Lemire. It depends on what character he is using though. This is for DC right?
I think Finch can draw great moments though. He just doesn't like being on books where the action is slowed down and I think that actually hurts his art.

    Heh.

I'd probably go with Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso just from 100 Bullets alone.

They're just natural and simple yet so eloquent.

I started essentially the same thread in the Marvel forum, too. Sometimes I wish there were just a general comics convo forum here, so I don't feel like I'm spamming posting the same basic thing two or three places.

I admit, I can't think of too many comics I read that were like that, or at least not ones that weren't heavily focused on the plot anyway. However, there was some great casual scenes in the Power Girl series that I really enjoyed, particularly the two times Power Girl and Terra go to the movies.

Casual scenes were the bread and butter of the Robin ongoing until they decided to kill everything Tim Drake ever loved. So I'd go with Dixon.

James Roberts - Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye - easily wins this prize.

Right now in the New 52...honestly I'll say Cliff Chiang who draws the Olympian Gods having a pool party no oone else seems to calm down enough for something like that.

Possibly going a little off DC (and topic) but I've always liked Charlie Adlard's casual scenes, whether it be his DC stuff or the Walking Dead. I own a really cool panel of his work from a Kyle Rayner/Ollie Queen crossover where they're sitting at a bar talking, I love it. For a book full of beautiful casual moments I'd say Daytripper though it's not exactly an action sort of book so that's probably cheating!
All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated and well supported in logic and argument than others.
