Lee's and Kirby's FF, for sure.

What about Bendis - this is supposed to be one of his strengths, isn't it? I haven't read enough of his stuff to judge for myself, but from the little I have seen, I can imagine him doing it well.

But for me, Steve Gerber is the guy who comes immediately to mind: I think because his stories were always as much about the characters and how they reacted to the bizarre events they found themselves involved in as about those bizarre events themselves. I always liked the everyday scenes where his characters were just sitting around in the kitchen or whatever, and wished he would do even more of that kind of thing. Howard the Duck was probably the most obvious series where he was able to indulge himself in this way, but it was evident in everything from Man-Thing to Omega to Void Indigo.

On the artist's side, David Marquez and Sara Pichelli are killing the quiet scenes (as well as everything else) on Ultimate Comics Spider-Man.

David Aja on Hawkeye, as well. And while I know a lot of people don't like his style, I think John Romita, Jr. can really show different levels of emotions within his art.

With writers, I think Hickman really nailed it both in Fantastic Four and FF. I think Gillen and Fraction are both at their best during "downtime."

The first scene I think of was from Avenging spider-man #5 where the Avengers were reading Caps old failed war propaganda from his artists days.

Liberty Bonds was said often. Very often. And it didn't escape the notice of the group. And the result was the kind of humor Bendis wishes he could write.

... Its weird I can't remember many other casual moments that weren't the Avengers having dinner while not fighting crime or some dramatic character building scene occuring.(that doesn't count right?)

I think the comics I read are too damn excitable.

    Edit: WAIT A SECOND SPIDER MEN# 4!!!

That whole sequence where Pete and the Ultimate spider-cast are shooting the breeze over the differences between the universe was amazing! I think the series was worth it for that scene alone.

    I can't believe I forgot about that!

Steve Rogers: You ready to follow Captain America into the jaws of death?
James Barnes: Hell, no! The little guy from Brooklyn who was too dumb not to run away from a fight. I'm following him."

From the late 80s and early 90s

David Michelinie (Iron Man and Amazing Spider-Man)
Because that era from Marvel was packed with events and new titles and even so ASM was still one of the best comics that had casual scenes,Iron Man the same.

    Currently (Writing wise)

    Mark Waid(Daredevil)
A big part of the mood of the stories ever since the relaunch of this title is the diference between how casual Matt Murdock is after the events of Shadowland.

    Bendis (New Avengers and Avengers)
New Avengers and Avengers were the most important Marvel titles in terms of relevances and how the events in those titles would be reflected in the MU,and yet were two of the titles with the most casual scenes.
Says a lot about the strenght of the writer in the casual scenes.

Zeb Wells (Amazing Spider-Man and Avenging Spider-Man)
A writer that have plenty of comics with cool casual scenes.

Currently in the art department #

    McNiven

    John Romita Jr
    Pull List:Uncanny Avengers,Avengers,Superior Spider-Man,Daredevil,All New X-Men,Hawkeye,Captain America,Thor:God of Thunder,Swamp Thing,Morbius,Thunderbolts,Iron Man,Fatale.

An FF classic, issue #54 where most of the issue is them hanging out in Wakanda after their first encounter with Black Panther

"...Doom's enemies have not the mettle to challenge him host to host, tooth to nail... As economic and military options fail them, they resort to simple rudeness."
