Default Essential reading for Rise of the Third Army

    Hi,

Sorry if this question has already been asked, couldn't specifically find an answer though.

I have never really read comics before so hadn't even really realized that the DCU was recently rebooted with the New 52. However I had always fancied reading them DC in particular, so when I read this had happened recently I decided to get on board. I started with Issue #1 of Justice League, Green Lantern, Batman and Aquaman. I realise with GL that it didn’t really receive a reboot and pretty much carried straight on for the previous volume, however due to cost I have attempted to catch up using Wikipedia. I am up to about issue #10 now and it is becoming clear (also from what I have read on the forum) that a major tie in between all GL titles is coming, The Rise of the Third Army. I just wondered what reading I need to have done before then, is it necessary to have read all the other titles up to this point? Or can I just start reading them all at issue #13 until the arc is complete (would be great if anyone could fill me in on the order too!), is it even completely necessary to read the other titles during the arc? Sorry, as I said I’m completely new to comics so not entirely sure how the whole crossover thing works! I have got most way through the Court of Owls arc in Batman without reading the other titles in that series (though I have no idea how much I might have missed, it seems to have been fairly coherent without them!!!)

Anyway, hope someone can help, hope I don't come across as too ignorant!!! Sorry about ALL the questions!

    Thanks

I just started reading GL when the new 52 started and I'm up to speed for the most part and really enjoying Rise of the Third Army so far.

I believe for Rise u will need to read Green Lantern annual 1 and all the 0 issues for Green Lantern family before u start 13

I dont think u will need to read any other issues besides that, however if u want to understand everything 100% then I would recommend reading since issue #1 but i dont think it is necessary.

You can read GL annual and GL 0-13 and be fine for GL. The third army arc won't be crossing over in a way that you'll have to read all the books. Each book will only follow their respective characters. But if you want to read the others you can start from issue #0 of New Guardians and issue #13 or Red Lanterns and Green Lantern Corps.

Like others said, you just need the annual and issue 0. Nothing from before the reboot isn't informed too you in these issues. While in the main GL title it focuses on Simon Baz, a new green lantern, you can see what is going in space in GL Corps starting with issue 13. Or you can see what's going on with the red lanterns in GL #13. And you can see Kyle's journey to become the white lantern in GL New guardians.
Action Comics, Batman, Justice League, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Night Wing, The Flash, Batman And Robin, Teen Titans, Batman Inc. , Earth 2, Avengers Vs Xmen

Hey, I hopped on at GL#0 and GL:NG #0 and love the series so much! I was able to go and get Secret Origin, Emerald Twilight (The original issues) and Rebirth. Is there any other books I need in order to hope on the GL bandwagon with Geoff Johns starting with Rebirth?

Also, how does the Ion miniseries and Rann/Thraggar War connect to the mythos? If I don't read it, will I be missing a chunk of the story, or is it not necessary at all? I heard that's where Kyle becomes Ion again. Do they show a quick flash at least of Kyle becoming Ion again in one of the other GL books?

For the new 52, you honestly don't need anything in the past, so at the end of the day, NOTHING is essential.

You know what I mean. The Green Lantern mythos continued into the New 52 if I'm not mistaken. And it builds off of previous events. I was just wondering back in the day if Ion was considered part of the mythos, or if it was just ignored and not mentioned as GL by Johns Vol 4 and 5 continued on?

I never read the Rann/Thraggar War and I'm perfectly fine. Stuff that happens outside of GL mythos (like Final Crisis) is usually not mentioned in any of the GL series.

    You'd be good with
    GL:Rebirth,
    GL: Sinestro Corps Wars,
    GL: Secret Origin
    GL: Blackest Night
    Blackest Night
    GL: Brightest Day
GL: War of the Green Lanterns.

They cover the major arcs. If you want to fill in more of the gaps I would get
the 3 issues (GL 18-20) of Mystery of the Star Sapphire (or it is part of the collection in GL:Wanted Hal Jordan)
GL: Rage of the Red Lanterns
    GL: Agent Orange
