The fact that this particular religion is an official religion of a country is more troubling, but that's the fault of the citizens for allowing a religion to have official governmental status.
The CofE has no governmental status.

They can be priests but not bishops.

It depends. Like some countries, the Anglican Church is divided into provinces such as the Anglican Church of Canada, Episcopal Church of the United States, etc.

In both Canada and the United States (and other "provinces") women can become bishops.

Crazy talk!! Those long flowing robes and ornate headresses are clearly made only for manly men!

"Let the women learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression." (I Timothy 2:11-14)

"Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church." (I Corinthians 14:34-35)

"Of the woman came the beginning of sin, and through her we all die." (Eccles. 25:22)

Doesn't sound like the bible agrees that women are suitable bishops.
Maybe it's time to put it in the same library section as other mythologies.

That's something that's always baffled me about the British monarchy and the Church of England; it was set up to allow the King of the day to divorce, but they still take a dim view to members of the royal family remarrying or marrying others who are divorced.

Between that one King and now we had the Victorian era, which kind of rewrote the rule book on marital fidelity in monarchs.

Gay marriage has already passed in Scotland. England and Wales should pass it before the next election and the chances of Northern Ireland passing it is fairly high too.

Should there be female bishops? It really depends on the actual role of the Church of England in the overall metaphysical situation.

If the clergy of the Church of England are receiving and passing on the Word of God, then there is nothing to debate, because the Supreme Being has spoken.

If the clergy of the Church of England are just using religion to impose their values upon the unsuspecting laity of the Church of England, then it's all b-s anyway and they might as well be fair about it and put it up for a vote. And if individual members of the church don't like it, they should leave and start their own faith. Or join some other religion. Or become atheists or agnostics or whatever.

Women not being bishops is a strictly MAN MADE imposition. God does nor (nor ever will) actively discriminate against someone. Women can spread the word of God just as well as any man.

The thing is, when you have faith... it's not something you so quickly throw aside. Faith is faith; you don't change it based on overly-conservative (as in "stuck in the old ways" not the political party) male-impossed rules.

Women bishops will be accepted, not in this decade but between the next twenty and thirty years.

    Tsk tsk.
