Decided to go mostly with street-levelers, and with no characters that are too powerful to be threatened by any of the natives. Certainly no "solo the setting" peeps for me. Also, it would be nice to have people who can actually teach me some of their skills in the process of adventuring, so I wouldn't have to be completely redundant to the team effort. So I'm picking:

    Walker, Texas Ranger
    MacGyver
    Finn and Jake (Adventure Time)
    John Rambo
...and Cameron (Sarah Connor Chronicles), programmed to protect me. Should have decent survival odds (Cameron probably can't be hurt one on one by anything short of a dragon, and Jake, while not an expert combatant, is an enormous practical asset) while still having a challenging time. Not to mention fun.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
    Through passion, I gain strength.
    Through strength, I gain power.
    Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
    The Force shall
    set me free.

    Serious answer:

-Hawk and Fisher (Rupert and Julia), from the Forest Kingdom series of novels. Concidering all they fought in Haven, Middle Earth will be very familiar (if not less stressful). Experinece dealing with magic too. Depending on when I get them, Hawk either has his magic-cutting ax or maybe even the Rainbow sword too boot. Both are a step above regular fighters (not Peak human, but better than real people for the most part), and both can be intimidating as all get out. Beyond that, they're married and work better together. Fisher brings a female to the quest who can easily keep up with the group and is actually a good brawler outside sword fighting.

-Lord Matthew Mantrell (A Wizard in Rhyme). A powerful magic user without breaking the setting. Okay with a blade if needs be, but much more impressive in magic, real world knowledge (from out world), LotR knowledge, science, and that stuff. Good attitude to have around as well.

-Kaladin (The Stornlight Archive). A medic turned spearman who's used to a harsh lifestyle and has great survival instincts. Plus, his odd powers (sort of like TK) will be useful alongside his excellent tactical mind.

-Count Bernard (The Codex of Alera novels). The archer for our cause. With his woodcrafting and earthen abilities, he'll be an excellent addition. Plus he's stronger, tougher, and hardier than most. Beyond that, he's a very practical and good guy.

-Polgara (David Edding novels). I needed someone to help protect against the more esoteric things we might miss. She also brings a good balance to the group (so Fisher isn't by herself), brings knowledge, power, and a good bearing for when things need diplomacy.

So I have an archer, a spearman, an axeman, a sword fighter, a wizard, and a sorcerress.

Which also nets me a woodsman, a medic, a Prince (also a cop), a Princess (also a cop), a literature scholar/scientist, and a diplomat/mother hen.

Perfect balance and all bases covered. :)
