The trick is to pick up a few basic followers, then work on gaining superpowers by whatever means necessary. Until you've racked up a huge list of powers, don't worry about the actual conquering, because there's plenty of people you won't be able to get to and raising too much fuss will cause supers to swoop in on you.

Being sent back home sounds good to me. Though if I was going to use this power I'd use it on ordinary mortals first, as many as I can manage. Once done, I'd let them reshape the world in my image. What superhero in his right mind would go against ordinary, nonevil people?
