Default Music from around the globe recommendations thread

I love music and many others that visit this forum do too. However when listening to the radio or watching MTV (do they still play music anyway?) I get so tired of the same generic crap that's played everywhere. There are so many brilliant bands, singer-songwriters etc around the world that should get more attention imo, so that's why I started this thread. Everyone knows quite a couple of their favourite artists in their country/region that are deserving of a little more attention, so why not list them here...

When listing you recommendations please mention where that artist is from and what genre(s) it is and a song on youtube or similar for reference. No need to list mainstream stuff like the Madonna's, Rihanna's and such of the world. We all know them already.

To start with here are some recommendations from the Netherlands, that I think should be interesting to others:

Sabrina Starke - Backseat Driver and Do For Love (R&B/Soul)
Alain Clark - Nympho and Father and Friend (R&B/Soul)
Carice van Houten - Particle of Light (singer-songwriter)
Candy Dulfer - Pick Up The Pieces (Jazz/funk)
Caro Emerald - Back It Up (Pop/50's sound)
Giovanca - Joyride and Drop It (Pop/Soul/R&B)
Tim Knol - Sam <--- great comic art video (singer/songwriter/country)
Ilse DeLange - Winter of Love (Country/pop)

    De Staat - Sweatshop (Rock/indie)
Anouk - If I Go (Rock)
    Baskerville - Devil's Town (Drum 'n' Bass/electronic/rock)
Go Back To The Zoo - I'm The Night (See You Later) (Rock/indie)
Handsome Poets - Dance (The War Is Over) (Pop)
Moke - Here Comes The Summer (Rock)
    Racoon - Liverpool Rain (Pop)
Voicst - Everyday I Work On The Road (Rock/indie)

Kraak & Smaak - Dynamite and Hold Back Love (electronic/dance/funk)
The Mirror Conspiracy - Tubbs' Dentist (electronic/film score/jazz)
Wicked Jazz Sounds Band - The Biggest Sin (funk/jazzy)
Zuco 103 - Nunca Mais (Brazilian)

    Other countries
Belgium - Balthazar - Hunger At The Door (rock/indie)
Belgium - Selah Sue - Raggamuffin and Fyah, Fyah (singer-songwriter/reggae/pop)
Australia - Sneaky Sound System - UFO (electronic/dance/pop)

Well that list turned out a little longer than I anticipated, but I hope you find some good stuff there and I look forward to other recommendations from around the world.

    FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU--

    Naw, just kidding.

Fortunately, I've recently been getting in touch with my Indo roots, and part of that involves listening to current Indonesian music.

A musician I like quite a bit is Sandhy Sondoro (pop, soul). This is his song 'Tak Pernah Padam'('Never Fade Out').

And as far as I'm concerned, this is Indonesia's best-kept secret: 22-year-old Sherina Munaf (pop singer). Here she is with her song 'Ku Bahagia' ('I'm Happy').

Here's a video of my favourite Indonesian rock band, Gigi (which means 'Teeth'), who have been around for the past 20 years and are still going strong. The song is called 'Nakal' ('Naughty').

Here's jazzpop singer Tompi, from the province of Aceh, performing 'Menghujam Jantungku'. (I actually don't know what 'hujam' is. I only know 'hujan', which is 'rain'. 'Jantungku' is 'my heart'.)

I can't neglect mentioning the Indonesian Princess of Pop, Agnes Monica Muljoto. DEVOUTLY Catholic (can't stop tweeting about Jesus), but I'm smitten with her voice and her songs. Here's a ballad of hers, 'Cinta Di Ujung Jalan' ('Love's Run Its Course').

Well, that's about all I wanted to share. Hope you guys enjoy it! Also check out my siggy, which right now happens to link to a Swedish song of all things, that caught my ear when browsing charts from other countries. It's an electropop ditty by a gal named Alina Devecerski. It also translates surprisingly well into an acoustic performance, which can also be found on Youtube.

Lately I've been listening to classical and Miles Davis, but a while back I went on a music from other parts of the world spree - these are the two I remember offhand:

(sweden) Jeniferever - Atlantis Arise (Post Rock)
(spain) Ninos Mutantes - Capitán cobarde (indie rock)

Thanks for those recommendations. I think thar Jeniferever sounds like when the Smashing Pumpkins would meet Radiohead. Pretty good stuff!!

Thought of a couple interesting more:

Marie Fredriksson (female half of Roxette) who does amazing somewhat melancholic songs (pop/jazzy/bluesy) in Swedish, like Så Länge Det Lyser Mittemot and Drömmen. She also recorded an album in English some years ago to help her through her recovery of her brain tumor like A Table In The Sun pretty heavy and inspirational stuff.

Fatoumata Diawara from Mali (living in France, born in Côte D'Ivoire) - Bissa and Sowa (world music)

Some time ago I discovered this Austrian electronic label G-Stone recordings. They have a great bunch of artists such as

Rodney Hunter - Electric Lady and Find It (house/electronic/soul)
Kruder & Dorfmeister - Speechless and Aikon (electronic/DnB)
Tosca - Superrob and Orozco (electronic)
Richard Dorfmeister vs Madrid De Los Austrias - On The Moon Maybe (electronic)

Also Austrian is Parov Stelar who has electronic as a base but mixes it with swing/dance/house/jazz etc. Listen to Charleston Butterfly, Coco and Matilda to get an idea.

I'm a bit of a Slavophile, particularly Russian. If it's European, east of Poland, then I'm interested, but I favour rock/alt rock/punk/ska.

    Russian
    - Splean - rock - Bonnie & Clyde
    - Lumen - punk/rock - How? (Skolko?)The State (Gosudarstvo)
    - Leningrad - punk/ska - Swallow (Lastochka)
    - Arkona - pagan metal Hail Rod Hail! (Goi Rode Goi)In My Land (Na Moey Zemle)Call of Battle (Zov Bitvy)
    - Korol i Shut - old school horror punk (well, for Russia-- late-80s) - Memories of a Lost Love (Vospominaniya o biloy lyubvi)
    - KnyaZz - spinoff of one of the guys from Korol i Shut - In the Mouth of the Dark Streets

    Polish
    - Akurat - ska/punk/rock - I Like To Talk To You (Lubie Mowic Z Toba)Fantasmagorie
    - Radogost - folk metal - Remember My Name

I like that Mangroove tune. Sounds a little like Wicked Jazz Sounds meets Zuco 103. Listened to their 2012 album on iTunes and sounds really good too. A little more dancy/electronic. Might go ahead and buy that.

My favorite group is Within Temptation and they are from Holland. Basically symphonic rock music (calling them metal would be too extreme). Unfairly get called Evanescence ripoffs seeing as they existed long before Evanescence.

This is actually a cover song they did (they released a new cover song every week for the last couple of months to pacify fans until their next album) but it gives a good idea of their sound as they took a straight forward pop song everyone has heard and made it into a hard rock song:
