Default Collected Editions / Trade Paperback Recommendations

    Hi folks,

I am getting back into reading comics. I have to say that I prefer collected editions, or trade paperbacks, as I like being able to read stories all in one go rather than waiting between issues.

So far, the only Collected Edition book I have is ASM Spider Island and I like this a lot.

I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to recommend me some other books that I should check out?

I am looking for something that is darker and more mature (I am 32 years old). I'm not really into science fiction or historical books. I like psychological thrillers, drama and action genres.

I really don't know where to start! Even if the books aren't Marvel - any suggestions are appreciated.

Here are my favourite artists, which might help with suggestions:

    Alex Ross
    Bill Sienkiewicz
    Marcos Martin
    Humberto Ramos
    Marko Djurdjevic
    Jock
    Paulo Rivera

Anything with artwork by these guys is a big plus.

    Thanks!

Seeing how you're not into science fiction, that means most of my favs are out. So I'd recommend Hellboy and also it's spinoff B.P.R.D by Mike Mignola. Really great series. Most is collected into library editions(Hardcovers).

    Regarding artists:

Rivera is doing Daredevil, I think, Haven't read it so i can't comment on it

Batman: the black mirror by Scott Snyder had Jock on art. Haven't read that one either, but Snyder hasn't dissapointed at all on Batman for the past year

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know that Jock did artwork for that Batman book. I guess that most modern Batman stuff is quite dark, right?

Paulo Rivera isn't doing Daredevil anymore; his work only appears in the first two collected editions if I'm not mistaken. But if you like his work, there's a pretty good chance you'll like the work of his replacement, Chris Samnee. Samnee and Mark Waid, who writes Daredevil, alos recently finished a Rocketeer miniseries that should be collected sometime in the next few months.

Marcos Martin did a run on the Amazing Spider-Man books a couple of years ago, for which he turned in some great art. So if you like Spider-Man, you might want to check those out.

If you're into dark, noir-ish stuff, then I would strongly recommend Criminal by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. It's ostensibly a crime series but it's really a slice of life character drama that happens to take place in the darker corners of the criminal world. It's an ongoing series with multiple collected volumes. I'd also recommend Peter David's work on the current volume of X-Factor, a fun mix of action, humor, social commentary and satire dressed up as mutant superheroes.

Also, DMZ by Brian Wood and Ricardo Burchielli. It's a dark sort of near-future dystopia story, but in this case, the "apocalypse" comes in the form of a citizen revolution in which the rebels take over the city of New York and basically secede from the U.S. to become a rogue republic. It was an ongoing series that wrapped up about a year ago, but the entire run has been collected.

Thank you for your answer. Lots of great stuff to check out. Criminal looks especially good.
