Default Hostess, A Little Piece of Comics History, Going Out of Business

Hostess Brands, the wholesale baker whose offbeat ads for Twinkies, CupCakes and Fruit Pies were a staple of American comics from 1975 to 1982, will close for good next week in the wake of a crippling nationwide strike.

Sad news for those laid off. But, I enjoyed the Hostess ads nonetheless. If you didn't enjoy them, then you haven't a heart.

I was worried for a moment until I realized that it's Little Debbie that makes Zebra Cakes and Oatmeal Pies. Since I have no heart, I'm now all good.

Dang, I had hopes they'd get out of the red. <Sigh> Even though we don't have Hostess food in he Philippines, I still enjoyed their wacky, cheesy ads.

I liked the ads more than I liked the actual food. I haven't had a twinkie since Zombie Land compelled me to buy some.

This made me sad but I can't say I'm surprised. Hostess had six different CEOs in eight years and demanded that the workers take an immediate pay cut across the board of eight percent while the CEO tripled his own pay.

Fat cat execs gorge themselves on bonuses and stock options, run away rich because the workforce won't stand for any more cuts in pay, benefits and retirement. The upside is maybe fewer people will be poisoned into obesity.

Yeah I think the company's products did no favors for people's health although I do feel bad for the workers who'll lose their jobs.

The Hostess pie ads were pretty awesome though.

I think those awesome ads were a bigger part of my childhood than the products were. I can probably count on one hand the number of Twinkies I've had in my life. My biggest childhood memory of Twinkies was this one pack that survived a road trip from New Orleans to DisneyWorld and back without being eaten. I was about 10 years old before I associated Dolly Madison with anything other than Peanuts cartoons. When it came to desserts, we just tended to either buy locally or make things from scratch.

    But I miss those ads.

I would pay for a collection of all the Marvel Hostess ads. I'd love to have them all in one place.

Damn unions? Why not damn the corporate CEOs who gave themselves 300% payraises instead? The company was Bain'd. Blaming the workers who refused to take an eight percent paycut in the face of that sort of behavior from management is a little silly. Don't worry, though. I'm sure the same guys who drove the company into the ground will make a fortune on selling it to other companies who will then produce grossly unhealthy food for you to consume. :)

Isn't there a website that does exactly that?
Oh yeah! http://www.seanbaby.com/hostess.htm I think that's all of them.

What Tedrin said. 9 out of 10 times, unions aren't to blame; it's the CEOs that bleed companies dry.
