TNG introduced alternate realities based on decisions made, and DS9 continued with it. The newest movie took that and flew with it by making the overall perspective from one of those created realities (and sticking Prime Spock in it). Before those, everything was a causal loop, where you couldn't change the present - you could just be a component in the past that made the present for what it was. In other words, you can't change the future in Star Trek for Rumbles purposes.
