There were other MMOs besides Everquest and DAoC
Hell, City of Heroes and Anarchy Online had quest-based gameplay before WoW was around.
And WoW didn't make anything mainstream besides itself. Outside of WoW MMOs remain thoroughly niche. Nothing else on the market is even remotely close to WoW's numbers.
I played city of heroes at launch, it was in no way quest based like WoW.
Especialy the way wow has been since burning crusade, where you could go from 1-70 without ever grinding because you never ran out of quests.
I remember having to grind a ton in city of heroes.
And wow is an mmo, and it is the closest to mainstream, so saying it only made itself mainstream doesn't change the fact that it's an mmo that was mainstream.

City of Heroes always had way enough quests to reach the max level without having to grind like a madman.
And yeah, played this game since the start too, thank you very much.
Go in this building that looks identical to every other building a million times with what seems to be a randomly generated task isn't exactly the same thing as 50 zones with individual stories that progress to an end point and leads to the next zone.
Sorry, i've played almost every single mmo that's come out minus a lot of korean mmos, and wow started that.

So did I. And at least seventy percent of the game involved doing missions for contacts. Even if it wasn't a perfect replica of what WoW is now it was the same idea. And WoW back then wasn't much better, with several painful gaps between levels where all the quests were way too high for you complete and you'd have to grind up the old-fashioned way.
And on this point you're just arguing semantics. WoW only elevated itself, the rest of the MMO genre pretty much remained much the same, if not worse off than before. I'd compare it to the WWE and the pro-wrestling business in general, actually.
City of Heroes had story-driven missions first, plain and simple. Even if you didn't like the scenery.

Quit playing wow years ago, and you're starting a strawman arguement.
Just because you are a coh fan doesn't mean it's randomly generated missons that were almost all identical in identical locations were like wow.
See?
Daoc came out 3 years before both games, i recall doing quests in it. But it was a couple per zone.

IS SWTOR going to run for at least a year or do i have to jump in right now before they close it down?
I guess it's going to survive the year yeah. They probably are going to change some elements of their free to play system cause honestly as it is now it's just not good enough for really bringing a lot of players back but i don't think that it's going to die just yet.
