Default 30 Days of Night: Ongoing - Should I read the past story arcs?

I jumped onto 30 Days of Night - Ongoing in the Halloween Comixology sale and really enjoyed it. I love the art and the story is fairly violent but also exciting and the background it portrays is interesting. I did not know about the series that existed before but found out there are previous story arcs and a movie, all about this same group of Vampires and Barrow, Alaska.

If anyone has read it, is it necessary to go back and read the previous stuff? Is the previous stuff pretty good so it is a good move anyway? Thanks.

I haven't read anything but the very first series, but I loved it. It's definitely worth checking out. If the series maintains that level of quality throughout then I should check out the rest

Thanks! I will probably go back and get some of the older stuff. It seems to be a consistent universe they use.
