My theory: Doc-Ock tells the world Peter Parker is Spider-Man, Peter goes to Dr. Strange and the only way he can make Peter's identity unknown again is if he stops being Spider-Man. If it involves Strange. Bleeding Cool sounds like a crock of shit but they've been very accurate since I've gone to them.

Some people are just terrible conversationalists.

I’m gonna guess it was Slott himself, stuffing proof pages into g-strings and then tipping off the gossip gods just so he could create some hype. If it says on this thread that he was all stern about leaks—Slott seems pretty affable--that would give him good cover. Everyone knows Slott is the Belushi of the Bullpen. I’m not even gonna get into his last name.

Also might've been Bendis pulling the rug out of Slott's story just like he helicoptered onto Brubaker's revival of Steve Rogers. Coulda also been Brubaker, an army brat like Bucky and we all know Bucky in the movie likes to lethally snort snow rails and hit on ladies we wish were strippers.

But since Brubaker is working at Fox, shortly following Mark Millar there to do stuff, then the Scotsman is a good source. He may have started blabbing when they went to make it rain on that sweet sweat-soaked stripper stage with some of that Murdoch money left over from the Obama smear.

And the Scots invented golf and Scotch, and golfers can afford the fine single-malts preferred by exotic dancers. Scotland also gave us the first stripper, Mary, Queen of Shots, who was played by Scarlett Johannsen when the latest superhero craze took off. Natalie Portman played Queen Padme. They were sisters and blue-blooded strippers, as well as rivals for the affections of King Hulk.

The movie came out in 2008. Seriously. Everything is connected.

I guess my best guess is it was that PR guy who seemed oddly present only to monitor a "Cuppa Joe" interview. PR people carry crates of Cristal in their cars and relate to pole dancers on equal levels of sincerity.

I guess if I were an X-Men fan, I'd think the whole thing was an elaborate attempt at a viral (if not venereal) campaign to pump up a big new mutant, The Leaker.

The arguments that it was Petraeus are legion, so I'm not gonna even go there, but my money’s on slott for the last name alone..

    Sounds like.....

POSSIBLE SPOILER + SPOILER FOR ASM #698

...Ock's going to forget he's Ock in Peter's body, and just become the new Pete, with "only the reader the wiser." I mean that he'll lose Ock's memories, but retain some of his traits, while the real Pete languishes away somewhere.

It's Bleeding Cool, so I don't believe a word of it.

And if it is true... for crying out loud, Marvel!

I'll admit it would be funny if the sequence went thus

"Spidey": Hello, world, I'm Peter Parker, also known as the Amazing Spider-Man.

    Doctor Strange: Oh, sh--!

*cue never-before-seen Amnesia of Agamotto spell, which makes everyone forget everything that's not convenient to the plot*

And BOOM -- "Spidey" forgets he's not the real Spidey, thus restoring the character... sort of. I mean, he might have been a clone this entire time.

Edit: On consideration, I could accept something like that if it were set up right. Strange is very fond of Spider-Man, and it would be in character for him to keep researching and fine-tuning the spell that protects his identity. He might have found a way to strengthen it between Spider Island and now, so that it would go into effect whenever someone found out Peter's identity and automatically remove that knowledge from the person's mind.

Why does Doc Strange like Spidey anyways...come to think of it, is there ANY hero that dislikes Spidey? At worst they just find him annoying...

Strange is on good terms with most heroes. But I think Peter's humility and work ethic appeal to him. There was a "From the Marvel Vault" issue which was purportedly their first adventure, where the two of them rescued J.J. and a group of their friends from another dimension. Even J.J. acknowledged Spider-Man as a hero, but seeing another dimension had been so terrifying that Spidey asked Strange to wipe their memories of the rescue and take away the trauma. Strange was impressed since he knew it would mean they'd also forget about Spidey's heroism.

Besides, Strange is familiar with the whole "a hero without glory" idea. He's had quite a bit of it himself.
