Default WonderCon Remains In Anaheim For 2013

After a brief period of uncertainty surrounding San Francisco's Moscone Center, the organizers of WonderCon have announced that they'll stick to the Disneyland-adjacent Anaheim Convention Center for a 2013 show from March 29 to 31.

As I assume it would to any other Bay Area resident who likes comics, this makes me sad.

WonderCon started as a homegrown convention by local comics stores and their fans. And went on strong for years. So much so that it soon outgrew it's humble beginnings and was purchased by Comic-Con International. And now, they have taken it from the community that started it. Oh well, back to the drawing board, time to make a new one here in the same way WonderCon was made. Image did a good job of it earlier this year when they did their con in Oakland, because they know there is much more to the Bay Area than just San Francisco. We will adapt and survive.

Sounds like the issue is more with Muscone. I remember this was talked about at the last one, whether or not Muscone was going to be ready for the next one. Apparently not?

Enough bullshit already! This is so annoying!

And yes, most of the blame lies with the greedy Moscone Center. They'd rather hold out for some other, bigger convention that's not going to be so local-centric (i.e. draw more out of towners who'll pay exhorbitant SF hotel rates) than stick with a sure thing. I hope their fancy renovated halls sit empty during spring for years to come...

I'm rather happy. I liked Wondercon in Anaheim last year. Although I'd rather Wondercon goes back to SF, and Comic-Con just runs a show at Anaheim.

I ask this because I honestly don't know, where else has the capacity to hold it?

Oakland Coliseum/Arena (or whatever corporate sponsored name it carries currently) perhaps. There is a huge underground convention area that extends under both sports/concert venues. With a pedestrian bridge connecting it to the BART station (our local subway system). IIRC, it is as big or bigger than Moscone and there are all kinds of hotels in the area. Dundracon used to hold their gaming conventions at just one of those hotels back in the 80s. Tons of restaurants of all kinds just outside the parking lot. Near the Oakland airport (regular shuttles exist to take flyers to BART), and connected near-directly to SFO via BART. And there is tons of parking for locals or people flying in and getting a car rental. Plus, Oakland is hungry for business. They'd love to have a big convention like this, especially if it brings celebrities to the city so they can get it all on the news. And to top it all off, WonderCon was born in Oakland.

Mr. Backlund continued wrestling under the new gimmick of an out of touch, yet highly dangerous, maniac out to teach the new generation a lesson.[3] He often appeared in business suits, had a hyperactive personality, and used (or, often, misused) large words to sound important. He also demanded that he be addressed as "Mr. Backlund". He would only sign autographs for wrestling fans if they could recite the names of all of the US Presidents in chronological order
