Default I want to get into collecting comics!

    Hi People!

I really want to start getting into reading comics, problem is I have very little knowledge surrounding the subject and every time I try and break in I always end up reading into a story line that has too much background for me to understand.

I'm asking for someone with a lot more experience and knowledge of plot's and all that stuff to help me find the ideal starting point. I'm looking to focus on batman stuff but if you can think of something better for a beginner to sink their teeth into then let me know.

    Thanks for you help!! :)

Grab Batman: Year One, Long Halloween and Dark Victory. That's one version of how things begin which might be a nice start.
All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated and well supported in logic and argument than others.

I would get the Batman series by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. #14 comes out next week. You could either start with #13 (where the current storyline started), or go back and get all the previous issues, which is what I'd recommend. The first seven issues are collected in a hardcover called "Batman Vol 1: The Court of Owls", or you could try to track down the individual issues. It was a very popular storyline so the individual issues may be hard to find at this point.

EDIT: I can't believe I forgot this...I get all my comics digitally, so if you don't mind reading on a computer or a tablet, you can download the whole series from Comixology:

Read the #0 issue after #12, that's when it was published. And I think the Annual should be read after #7.

I just started a few months ago as well, and those three are absolutely the best to introduce a general history of Batman. Those would be a good idea, especially the first two.

If you eventually get to the New 52 (the current DC series), you really don't need much of a background in whatever characters you read. They rarely, if ever, bring up plot from older pre-52 stories. You should have no problem jumping into any of the New 52 series, especially if it's not in the middle of the small story arcs. I personally went all out, and started from the beginning of almost all the series I'm reading. You don't need to do that, and I'm sure each series has good points where you can start in the middle.

I'm in the same boat as you dub.....

Recently started collecting about 3 months ago...dad wrote comics for a long time, but wa never an avid reader myself. I picked up the walking dead first couple volumes, LOVED the story and the artwork, so started exploring the comic world.

I started slowly discovering that this is the absolute perfect time to be a newbie in the comic world with the new 52 and marvel now, so I got hugely into about 15 of the new 52 books, tracked down all of the back issues, reading all 3 marvel now titles currently out, and am reding about 10 other books from other sellers, image etc...

It's my news obsession, and is literally the best hobby in the world lol...

You started at a great time and I recommend tracking down he back issues now on the books you pickup. It will be hard to find them, but if your desperate, they are still available at this point. I can't see them being available for too much longer. Go now lol.

Some books I recommend are batman, swamp thing, animal man, saga.....and pretty much the rest of the new 52.... Very solid books.
