    Default Ultimate Collection

Was talking with a friend about his rookie sports card collection of all time great players (only grabs the rookie cards).....got me wondering, if you had say 20-25 comics that you would like to have in your ultimate collection, what would they be? Let's leave out the obvious Batman, Superman, Detective, Amazing Fantasy issues that we would all love to have.

Personally, I would love to have

Hulk 180 (first appearance of Wolverine)
Spiderman 300 (1st appearance of Venom.....I actually had this issue growing up )
    Killing Joke
    Death in the Family series

Will have to add more later

I don't really care about single issues unless they're specifically crafted to be single issues or gain some other benefit from being in the "floppy" format. Given that, I'd love to have one of Jack Kirby's early Marvel issues that he used collages in, preferably one of the Thor issues where he's cruising the Black Galaxy in search of Ego. Similarly, I love the Claremont/Sienkiewicz Demon Bear Saga. The art looks so great on newsprint. I guess I'd fill up the rest of my slots with treasuries and 80/100-page giants. Those books are just so cool as artifacts.

On a somewhat related note, a lot of local cartoonists in the area (and I assume this is true elsewhere, too) make really cool comic issues and mini-comics. They might have screen-printed or hand-bound covers, fold out in interesting ways, and so on. I'd definitely include some of those in my "ultimate collection."
All-Star Western, Casanova, Criminal, Daredevil, Dark Horse Presents, Funnies, Hellboy/BPRD, King City, Orc Stain, Snarked, Unwritten, Usagi Yojimbo

So what's the criteria for this question? How is owning Hulk 180 conceptually any different from owning Detective Comics #27? Is it just that the purpose can't be to resell the comic?

I'd actually rather own a Batman #1 than a Detective #27, just because Batman was the title that meant more to me when growing up. I ALWAYS wanted a Batman #1 and only came to appreciate that Batman began in Detective when I got older. Plus you get the first appearances of the Joker and Catwoman.

I recently acquired two of my long time dream comics: World's Finest #2 (first issue called "World's Finest") and Star Spangled #65 (1st Robin solo story). If cost weren't an issue, I'd also own More Fun Comics #52-53 (first Spectre story) and #54 (best Spectre cover ever). I do own #60, which is probably the second best Spectre cover.

A Captain Marvel #1 would be sweet (and, again, more desirable to me than a Whiz Comics #2 if value/collectibility isn't a factor).

I've got all the other key issues I've ever really wanted: Showcase 22, GL #1, Giant Size X-Men #1, Hulk #180 (don't get me started on 181!), FF #5, FF #48-50, and a bunch of others first appearances that have only come to matter to me later in adulthood.

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with what I have.

Oh, and I've never heard of that "viagra" title, but it sounds...exciting.

I've heard that it lasted much longer as a title than most people would have predicted when simply looking at the talent involved.

    @shaxper

there is no real criteria, your answer is basically what I am looking for............and my bad, it should have been Hulk 180-182 (the three issues of Wolverine)

See, I'm different. I'm thinking, complete collection of Marvel Masterworks, some DC and Dark Horse Archives, the leatherbound Monster Society of Evil reprint, Fantagraphics' Carl Barks duck books--all the really good archival stuff, right there on my bookcase.
Anyway, it is cool for you to acquire acrimony of crumbling time on blast this website.

Same. I'm not someone who goes out looking for key issues unless it's a part of a series I want to complete. So although I'd like a TMNT #1 and an Albedo #2, it's only to complete the TMNT and Usagi Yojimbo series. Without the rest of the cheap comics in the series I don't think I would care so much about owning the expensive ones. If I were to have an "ultimate collection" of just 25 comics, they would probably be 25 of the biggest, thickest TPB's I could find. So the Usagi Yojimbo slipcase set, the Walking Dead compendiums, the Tank Girl book, and so on.

My 2 fantasy gets would be a full run of Menace, and a full run of Yellow Claw.
