I tend to just grab whatever sounds interesting instead of who is writing it, but Joe Casey's Butcher Baker series is the sort of thing that makes me glad I read comic books. Seeley, Kirkman, Hickman and Vaughn are all writing stuff I'm really enjoying right now too, but Casey is my favorite.
American Vampire, Atomic Robo, Chew, Fatale, Hoax Hunters, Manhattan Projects, Revival, Saga, The Sixth Gun, The Walking Dead

my top 5 currently having some published Image works:
    Richard Starkings
    Jonathan Hickman
    Brian K. Vaughan
    John Layman
Grant Morrison (he counts now right?)
Ron Marz (does he count? Shinku #5 actually came out!)
Shane Houghton (does he count? lol)
    Joshua Williamson ("")

Well, I guess Morrison (just doing a mini), Marz (gets Shinku out once every few months), Houghton (series is on hiatus), and Williamson (series on hiatus) all add up to 1 writer. So there's 5! If those 4 don't add up to 1 writer, then I guess the Blue Estate crew will. ...that's now an ongoing, right? lol although I suppose I can just sub in Joe Casey...

    edit:
it's harder to really quantify a "writer at Image" b/c it's all creator-owned stuff and the writers work on their own schedule usually. So a writer can take 10 months between #1 and #2 of his book... and would he be considered "at" Image that entire 10 month span?

    edit2:
shoot, I totally forgot Brubaker... Ok, he's the 5th.

Comics were happier before the Internet turned writing superhero stories into fruitless attempts to impress/entertain a small group of ppl who appear to hate comics and their creators.

I tend to follow writers wherever they publish depending on the premise/genre of their work.

For Image, I'm reading books by...

    Robert Kirkman (THIEF OF THIEVES)
    Nick Spencer (MORNING GLORIES)
    Kurtis J. Wiebe (PETER PANZERFAUST)
    Nathan Edmondson (THE ACTIVITY)
    Jim McCann (MIND THE GAP)

I also think Steve Niles, David Hine, Greg Rucka, Brian Wood are fantastic writers.

There are more, but I can't remember them right now. ;)

My top five in no order would be:
    Vaughan
    Kirkman
    Jay Faerber
    The Luna Brothers
    Nick Spencer

    Artists:
Riley Rossmo - one of my favorites ever
    Rob Guillory
    Ryan Ottley
Cliff Rathburn - his ink and greytone work makes all of Kirkman's books sing!

Sounds like the OP is asking to find good, somewhat under-appreciated creators to look into. If that's the case, I'd recommend the Luna Brothers, Jay Faerber and Kurtis Weibe. They all do pretty diverse stuff so recommendations kind of depend on what you like. I've never read a bad comic from either the Lunas nor Jay Faerber.

everyone who writes for image is utterly rock solid from my experience. Easier just to choose subject matter you like than a writer

    My top 5:

    Brian Vaughan
Ed Brubaker (I find it really weird that I'm the only one who mentioned him so far)
    Tim Seeley
    Landry Walker
    Robert Kirkman

Grant Morrison would have been included but he has only written 2 issues for Image Comics for now.

Ed Brubaker is the best at the moment in Image. Maybe fans here dont see Fatale as original Image works and see Brubaker as Marvel guy. Or they are just Image fans who avoid Marvel and dont know his works. Rest of my top 5:

Ray Kirkman - sure other TWD he isnt as consistent but still The Walking Dead is The Walking Dead
Brian K Vaughn - havent read Saga yet but he is great with The Runaways, Y The Last Man etc
    Joe Casey - Wildcats 3.0!
    Jay Faeber - Near Death
    Pull List:
    The Walking Dead,Fatale,Near Death,Storm Dogs,Happy,BPRD,XO-Manowar
    American Vampire,Animal Man,Swamp Thing
    Daredevil, Winter Soldier,Indestructible Hulk
