Demon Knights 14 Preview / Discussion (Spoilers)

I really hope Al Jabr sticks around and receives his fair share of character development, because I agree that he has the potential to be one of the more interesting characters in the book. It's rare nowadays to have an Arab Muslim character who isn't used just to draw parallels to the War on Terror, and I would hate to see him written off so soon.

DC is really messing up by losing all this talent to Marvel. I wonder what made him switch, since Demon Knights at least has never seemed to suffer from the obvious editorial interference that a lot of other writers who've left DC have complained about.

I suspect it's a two fold thing; one I don't think DC is a brilliant place to work unless you're one of their important writers. Not as horrible as some might say, but certainly a lot of trouble. I don't think Marvel is particularly better for someone in the same position, but...

that brings me to reason two, which is that Cornell is a much bigger fan of Marvel than he is DC. In fact, he just loves Marvel comics beyond all reckoning, and has no real connection to DC.

And considering he got his start writing Dr. Who fanfiction, I think he leans towards his fan proclivities pretty hard.

Yes, well, I love Paul, but unless that's an X-23 series (which won't be because she's stuck into a Battle Royale knock-off) then everything being promoted as "snikt" can go straight to hell.

I'm actually pretty sure that is an X-23 series, given his proclivity for female leads. Perhaps a Wolverine Family book, with Daken, X-23 and Logan.

Think it's most likely another Wolverine or Daken book. However much I liked the X-23 book, the sales weren't exactly stellar and I am not sure she can be considered 'enough' to have her appear in more than one book at a time.

Being an Arab Muslim is what makes him so interesting and gives the writer the potential to do more. The character is a man of science and study from a time when Europe was in the Dark Ages. Most breakthroughs in science and math from that time were from the Muslim world. (everyone knows Algebra and zero, but there was a lot more) And this character himself is puts great importance in the fact that he approaches this insanity going on with a rationale mind and humanity. He and shining knight strike me as the two that bring a strong personal moral code to this world. Shining knight with his devotion to the greater ethics of chivalry and Al Jabr being a devout Muslim with his belief in the rationale world. So I would like to see more of both of them, especially Al Jabr since he gets short shrifted. He also brings the outsider point of view that works well in group dynamics, like Spok.

I don't see how the fast forward concept will allow Al Jabr to survive as is, though. 30 years, he's maybe in his 30s now...So he's going to be old man scientist instead of vibrant young scientist.

That's disappointing.

I dunno, I have a soft spot for older characters, so I'd like to see a 55-60 year old guy still kicking ass and doing science. Maybe he'll rely more on his crazy gadgets or something. Who knows.

Shouldn't matter much, all they've have had him do so far is say something witty and show up in the background of a few panels per issue. Old guys can do that.

It's just a bit more standard, I think. I sort of like the idea of a big smarmy, confident big science guy in the vein of Tony Stark, but with more of a moral compass, and no alcoholism. :)

I got the feeling he was going to be a Tony-Stark esque character, and I think some of the charm is lost when you skew older.
