Default New to comic books and looking for a place to start..

    Hey guys,

So i just started reading some "comics" for the past few months, and by that I mean that they've all been trades. Lots of batman, some superman, a little spiderman and some x-men. But now i'm looking to get into reading some of the single issues that come out monthly (or biweekly or whatever it is).

The new Death of the family story caught my eye and piqued my interest in individual issues to begin with so I'll be hunting down a copy of Batman #13 and then i plan on keeping up with that story arc as it comes out.

So I'm looking for other series to delve into as well, preferably something that's just started and not already out in trade. Any recommendations are okay, DC, Marvel, Vertigo, anything

You should read Dial H, the newest issue is a great jumping on point and a new story-line is about to begin. It's only at issue 6, too, so you don't have to go too far back to be caught up. It's the best DC comic right now, full of crazy awesome ideas and great humor.

Also the Prophet relaunch at Image is really excellent, the first trade is out collecting issues 21-26 (but don't worry about that, it's a clean break from what came before), but any issue is a good jumping on point if you just want to read bad-ass comics with amazing art.

if you like green lantern or a large cast of characters, i very much enjoy green lantern: new guardians. however, be forewarned that all the green lantern titles are currently involved in a year-long-built-up crossover. justice league dark is starting a new arc, and has been doing well. I also enjoy teen titans, but many (especially on here) will disagree with that suggestion. i also like team 7, which is giving background on this 'rebooted' universe

So, stuff that is being printed in single issues currently?
Well, you got Batman right. It's probably the best of DC. Batman Inc. is arguably second best, but it's deeply rooted in years of continuity by one writer. Not recommended to the uninitiated.
Superman, Supergirl and Superboy are currently in the middle of a just-started arc called H'el on Earth, although I'm not sure how that's being received.
Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, Red Lanterns, Green Lanterns New Guardians are just beginning an arc called "Rise of the Third Army". If you like GL, check it out.
Marvel I am not too familiar with, but I know that it's relaunching with all new #1's. You could hop on an arc with your favorite character.
Vertigo, I'm not too familiar with the current series at all.
    Questions?

Okay, can we just get a sticky thread where all the new people can go into and ask questions? I feel like there is a new "Hi I'm new to comics" thread every few days. Not that I'm complaining, always great to have new people!

I would say also pick up batman #0, since that will be continued later this year. Also, in Detective comics #1, Joker had his face peeled off. So that's something you should know before getting #13.

Justice League has a great jumping on point. If you have the money, go back and start with volumes 1-2. It introduces the characters of the DCU quite nicely. Also, Justice League is in the middle of a crossover with Aquaman starting on issue #15. Get Aquaman. He is so badass! Though probably start with issue #14 or #15.

I, Vampire. It's gory, it's funny, it's beautiful, I can't promote this book anymore! It's so so damn amazing. Get it! You COULD jump on at issue #0 and #13, but the other 12 issues are just so worth it in the long run. Amazing book.

Also, Earth 2 could suit you. It's not very connected to the other DC works and it's very good. It takes place on a parallel earth and stars different versions of the DC Earth 1 stars that people are use to. Start at #1 or start next issue.

There is a new Justice League book called JLA that is coming out in Feb. It's the companion title to JL and will continue plotlines leading to the soon to be epic event Trinity War.

I would either jump on Superman at issue #0 or wait for the new Superman book coming out soon by Scott Snyder and Jim Lee. Though out of the books out now, I would suggest picking up the Action Comics Grant Morrison run. It's great IMO. But start at the beginning!

I would suggest Earth 2 as it's sort of in it's own universe and isn't really interconnected with much right now. I've not had the chance to read 6 yet so I don't know where the book is arc wise but it's a pretty unabashed superhero book that's still building into a team. DC will be coming out with it's forth wave in a couple of months so you might want to check out a couple of those new titles.

Also would suggest some of the new books from Valiant. X-O Manowar and Bloodshot in particular have been very good but all of them have been enjoyable reads.

Marvel is in the middle of a big relaunch that will be going on over the next few months so you might want to check them out and see if anything new catches your eye as it could be an excellent opportunity to get in on the ground floor of some new series there. I'm looking forward to Indestructible Hulk myself.

    awesome, lots of good recommendations!

dial h for hero sounds like something that i'd enjoy and it's great that it's only been 6 issues so far. i'll check that out next time i go to the comic book store.

the #1's for marvels sound cool too, i'll definitely check out x-men if that's one of then, also I just found out that spiderman is rebooting after amazing #700, so i'll see how that goes as well when it comes out in december. I, vampire was one that caught my eye before as well.

Also, another question, is there any website that like shows all the batman
story arcs and the issue number and if it's been collected as trade before too?
With all the issues of batman that's been out already they couldnt all have been in trade form, could they?
I'd love to get some earlier batman's but if they're already in trade, it doesnt make much sense to me to get the singles.

Great time to start!!! Marvel NOW! is coming out with a bunch of new titles (I'd suggest the new version of Thunderbolts coming out in a couple of months if you like Deadpool, Punisher, Red Hulk, Elektra...). It's just up to you to decide which character/title you think looks the best. Otherwise, DC did the New 52. It should be relatively easy to catch up to a title (like Batman) or catch a new one coming out!!!

If you are interested in Spider-Man, they're redoing his character pretty soon (after about 4 issues). "Superior Spider-Man" should be worth getting.

    Perfect time to start.

And, get your friends hooked too ;)

Here is a sticky thread for all the Batman info you will need http://forums.comicbookresources.com...-Recent-Events. It talks about everything Batman you need to know, it's what helped get me reading comics a few months ago.

Within that is a link to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Batman_comics, this has all the Batman comics but use the thread I posted above to find out the best Batman comics.

If you have an iPad or another tablet I recommend checking out the comixology app. It has great deals all the time and $0.99 sales that happen often. I bought around 150 Batman comics for $0.99 a piece. It also has every New52 #1 issue for $0.99 and you can find every back issue on it too.

If you're interested in New 52 comics check this out for some info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_52

If your interested in MarvelNOW! check out this link for a little background info on all the comics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_NOW!

So there's some links to help you get started on a little research.
