Default Fabian Nicieza new "Irregular" writer on Batwing *Interview*

Not sure if this has been posted but Newsarama has an interview with Nicieza on his plans for Batwing in Year 2.

To be honest, I'm surprised this book is getting a second year, but it's good to see DC trying to make it work.

This is promising, although it doesn't sound like he's committed to it in the long term. Of course, if he does not succeed in capturing and realizing some of Batwing's potential, there may not be a long term.

Cool. I may give this title another go.

    Change is good.

Nicieza says he is writing book up until issue 20, probably 5th wave time. I think he is only doing book for that amount of issues, as chance book could be up for cancelation by then if sales not improved.

His arc does sounds like it will be good though.

As long as half the arc doesn't inexplicably take place in Gotham or feature Batman/Nightwing in contrived roles, I'm on board.

I'm gonna be honest, I'm really hoping that Nicieza gives me a reason to keep reading this title. The last two issues have kind of gotten me down on the title, whereas the first twelve/thirteen made this title interesting and good enough to make me pick this up every month, but these last two have made me think about dropping it for another Marvel Now! title like Avengers Arena, Iron Man, or the Uncanny X-Men title that was just announced. Here's hoping that Nicieza makes Batwing worthwhile.

Don't get your hopes up. Look at who the editor is. We saw his handy work with a certain dreadlocked teen that ended badly. He better do the greatest editing job of his career because his track record isn't good.

Yeah, I really think the book is going to end at that 20th issue. I'll just copy paste what I said on my blog...

Batwing isn't doing well in sales, and with each passing wave of cancellations, there aren't a whole lot of books left between Batwing and the bottom. Nicieza's comments in his interview don't exactly inspire much hope either, as he went out of his way not to say he was the new "regular writer," saying he'll have an arc go at least to issue 20. If I had to guess, we could see some more cancelations around issue #20 in the New 52. It's May, Trinity War is soon to start, the New Superman book comes out around then, and DC seems to cancel book at numbers that can be divided by 4. (#8, #12, #16). So, all signs point to Batwing getting the axe, if I had to bet.

Yeah I can see them folding the book into Batman Inc when Morrison ends his run there.

I can see them doing that as well but I really don't see Inc. lasting much past Morrison's involvement with the book. I've heard a lot of people here, at my LCS and elsewhere say that when Morrison is gone from Inc. they will be as well and then there will be those that drop the title after a few non-Morrison issues because "it's just not as good as or it's not the same as what Morrison would do". I know that's not concrete evidence that things will go badly for Inc. post-Morrison but I've heard it enough to wonder how many of the current readship are interested in Inc because of the characters and how many are only interested in the characters so long as it's Morrison penning the title. If DC does fold Batwing into it then they will be doing so in the hopes that the fans of the Batwing ongoing will follow him to Inc. and that the fanbase will be enough to shore up Inc. should a lot of people bail. For myself, I'm not interested enough in the concept of Batman Inc to follow Batwing to that title despite the fact that I loved the character solo title.

I'm hoping Batwing sticks around in some way, even if the book's cancelled--Winnick's really gotten me to love this character.

I like the sounds of what Nicieza is planning. Its sounds like he intends to build David's world up a little more which I've is an area I thought Winnick was lacking in. I hope the book sticks around past #20 as I find Batwing to be one of the more solid book in the DCU with plenty of territory left to be explored.
