Default DC Cancels "Hellblazer," Announces New 52-Based "Constantine" Ongoing

As of February's "Hellblazer" #300, John Constantine will no longer walk the London streets of Vertigo. Instead, Robert Venditti will tell the solo adventures of his New 52 Justice League Dark counterpart in "Constantine."

Frankly, I was surprised when a book called CONSTANTINE wasn't part of DC's initial 52 title launch. Sad for the people who were enjoying Milligan's take, but this move makes sense to me.

I feel for the people who are losing hellblazer, but I'll be reading this. And as moves go it doesn't seem like a bad one from a business point. Constantine has become something of a central figure in the Dark line.

I just wish Peter Milligan was writing this then this would've been a bullseye.

I'll be reading this. I've loved Constantine in JLD, both Milligan & Lemire's take. I have faith it will be well written, since the writer states he's looking to both Hellblazer & JLD as inspiration on his take, and that he plans on exploring his depth, while also keeping the smoking con man part and parcel with the series.

I think they felt they needed something that denoted a clean break.

I, too, would have liked to see Milligan continue, but failing that I think there were a number of people that might have been capable of delivering something interesting AND that fit in with the DCU well enough, choices I would have sought before Venditti. Mieville, for instance, is walking that line perfectly with Dial H. Rozum delivered the kind of world I'd like to see a superhero Constantine inhabiting in his "Xombi", even had an obvious Constantine stand in. "Brits" with cred in 2000 AD like Rob Williams, Si Spurrier, Al Ewing, Ian Edington. I'd have mentioned Diggle, but he had his run.

That is excluding impossibilities, like Ellis, Ennis, Gillen, etc.

I don't see why Milligan should continue, he's done 50 issues of Hellblazer, that's a good long run.

Not that thrilled about this one, to be honest. The JLD Constantine doesn't come close to Hellblazer Constantine. Plus I don't want to see Constantine stories hampered with a Teen rating.

That's too bad. This is one of those books I've bought every month for years and have enjoyed. But, it makes it easier for me to go back and get what I've missed so that I can complete it. I will check the new book out too.

Pretty sure, it'll be a teen plus.

Will definitely pick this up. I was a fan of Milligan's take in Hellblazer but ended up dropping it (not sure why now that I think about it). The new52 version is pretty cool to me so I'll be giving this a shot.

Most probably because we don't know if the new writer can maintain the type of quality Milligan has been producing.
