I remember he had contacts in Morrisons run, he just doesn't wear them often cause he doesn't know when he needs to use his powers (you get taken by surprise alot as a superhero in general). Taking out contacts in the middle of combat then putting them back on when its over doesn't seem very practical. Glasses on the other hand are easily removed and put back on.

I thought the blasts came from his whole eye, not just his irises. Contact lenses can't cover the whole eye.

Not according to the first printing of "OHOTMH".
