The 50-state (plus 2) flag idea is pretty cool. However, I'll be sticking with the standard U.S. Flag cover. Old Glory, baby. Old Glory.

This is the kind of stupid gimmick I enjoy. Furthermore, I can tell you it will already increas sales by at least one. I likely would have taken a pass on this comic, but now I think I will at least pick up the Washington State variant for issue #1.
When I think of gimmicks I think of the 90's (before the market went bust) but I guess in the New 52 the old is worth revisiting again if they can scrape a few sales out of it from collectors eager to embrace the gimmick.
Strangely enough, while I never ever get variants, I can see getting the regular version and the version for my state. I don't think I would just want the one for my state.
It doesn't matter what the writer, artist, or editor had in mind when they created it, or what they said in an interview;
all that matters is what is on the page.
Just the regular for me. Being from Ireland and all.
Pull list: Animal Man, Action Comics, Aquaman, Batman, Batman Inc, Detective Comics, Green Lantern, Justice League, Ravagers, Superman, Swamp Thing
It doesn't matter if it is incentive based or not, the fact is that releasing 52 covers for the same comic is an overkill. It is as bad as when Kirkman did it with the Walking Dead and as bad as when Jim Lee/Marvel did it with X-Men #1 in the 90's. How is this bringing the supposed new readers DC wanted when they did the reboot? They are just catering to the same collector's market again, which is what brought them to the position they are in right now. They will probably sell 300,000 copies of Justice League of America #1, but it will be to the same 75,000 people who will buy 4 copies of each. And then by issue #2 they will have to resort to another gimmick to sell the comic. You know what sells better and to more people? Good storytelling. The perfect example of this has been Aquaman, a character who had horrible sales in self-titled runs in the past, yet the great storytelling in it, not gimmicks, have it a monthly top ten title in sales today.
I really doubt that there'll be 75,000 people buying 4 covers. Unlike Walking Dead, the 52 JLA covers will only have different flags. So people will probably just get the USA flag (main cover) and their state flags. Some people who've lived in different states may get more but I doubt it. I don't think JLA will sell 300,000.It'll probably be closer to 200,000. Retailers won't bite and neither will the fan base. I haven't seen 1 person mention they're buying even close to 4.
Pretty much, yeah. Sure, it's seriously overkill to have fifty-two variants- but it does seem kinda harmless, considering it's not incentive based and the variants only have well, one variation. I can't imagine anyone buying more than two or three variants, and it's not really something that'll affect overseas buyers either. When Walking Dead had its (what was it, eleven covers?) I saw people buying all of them, but yeah, they were actually different covers. This just seems more like a "get your own state flag on your comic cos that's cool or something" kind of gimmick rather than the "buy loads of variants, you'll be able to sell them for thousands one day" gimmick.
Ah, so we're getting Washington DC and Mexico/Canada for a variant State cover.
It's only a matter of time folks, only a matter of time.
