    Default Russ Manning Tarzan

I have to admit, I'm really excited about the Russ Manning Tarzan Archives series Dark Horse is releasing. (I already know about Brothers of the Spear, too, and am likewise excited.) I do have some questions:

    1) How many Tarzan stories did Manning actually do for Dell/Western/Gold Key? Any idea how many Archive editions that works out to?

    2) I know Manning went on to do three years of the newspaper strip. Was this Sundays only, or seven days a week? How much of this was NOT reprinted by DC?

    3) I know that a lot of DC's Russ Manning work is actually reprints of Manning's three years on the newspaper strip. Did Manning do any original work for DC?

    4) Finally, I think I recall that Manning did 2-3 graphic novels for European audiences. I don't think these have ever been reprinted for distribution in the U.S.--does anyone know for sure? Will Dark Horse get to these as well?

I've been checking Google, but I haven't had much luck. Thanks!!

Several years back, Dark Horse released three larger paperback-sized (but not comic book size) Russ Manning/Tarzan books. I don't know if these were newspaper reprints or the Euro graphic novels you mentioned but they read like graphic novels so I suspect the latter. They were really nicely done. One was a retelling of Tarzan of the Apes. Another dealt with Opar.

I don't believe that Manning did any original work for DC.

I, too, am looking forward to this book.

It's news to me that Manning only worked on the Tarzan strip for three years. It seemed to me like he was the Tarzan artist forever. When I picked up the Gold Key comics, I was happy to see the artist I knew from the Sunday funnies and I just figured that's how he ended up working on Tarzan for Gold Key, not the other way around. For awhile there, I was even cutting out the Sunday pages so I could read them like a comic book (as I did with other Sunday features--I guess these all got thrown out at some point). Our paper never carried a daily Tarzan strip.

I remember when DC did the reprints in some of the Tarzan comics (including the Tarzan digest). It seems to me these were mostly cobbled together from Sundays. Occasionally there was an odd looking panel, which might have been a re-sized panel or might have been one of the DC production artists creating a panel to make everything fit.

    you should have checked wikipedia.

    1) he adapted 10 of the first 11 Tarzan stories. He did this over 1965-69.

Dark Horse would reprint 6 of them in 3 collections (as noted, larger then comic books, but not full 'trade paperback' size): "Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan of the Apes" (Tarzan of the Apes, Return, Beasts, and Son of Tarzan), "Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan — The Jewels of Opar", and "Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan The Untamed" (Tarzan the Untamed and Tarzan the Terrible).

NOT reprinted were "Tarzan and the Golden Lion", "Tarzan and the Ant Men" and "Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle". (the last only layouts, really).

Manning also did the first 11 issues of Gold Key's Korak comic.

Don't know how many archives will cover his Tarzan work, but I think I worked out the Brother of Spear archives to be about 4-5 volumes, but not all would be Manning's work.

Manning did Brothers of the Spear in Tarzan #39 to 154, when he moved over to doing Tarzan.

    2) he worked on the daily from 1969 to 1972 and the Sunday from 1969 to 79. No idea how much was reprinted by DC. Keep in mind that the DC Tarzan was first original work by Kubert.

    3) Manning never worked for DC. Don't know how much of his work DC reprinted. the Grand Comic Book database would be the place to look. comics.org

    4) he did four original Tarzan graphic novels for the European market. Dark Horse DID reprint 2 that deal with Caspak: Tarzan in The Land That Time Forgot and The Pool of Time in one collection.

Wish they'd do the other 2.
