You would think they would make more of an effort for the sole female superhero of the original Avengers team. But this is Marvel after all, who did not think Black Widow was worthy of her own title even after Scarlett Johansson's portrayal in the movie was embraced wholeheartedly by the audience.

And at least Jan is finally alive now, unlike the sole female founding member of another major Marvel superhero team.
Marvel has had multiple Black Widow series but it never sold. Same thing with Elektra. I don't think Marvel has done anything wrong with Janet(other than Benids killing her). She continued being the quicky character that we love. We could say Marvel did more with the Scarlet Witch, she has had far more character developement than Wasp yet, Wanda's personality is still a cypher. At least Wasp's personality is more identifyable and she's becoming sort of iconic in her own way for that.
Kurt Busiek Says:"Best Avengers Run, Steve Englehart's run in the 1970s. With Roy Thomas's run that preceded it close behind, and the Conway/Shooter/Michelinie run that followed close behind that

Wanda has no personality other than crazy, and after House of M, folks started calling for her head but Marvel still insists on shoving her down everybody's throat. She was better off alone in a distant corner of Latveria somewhere, away from stories.

And post-Avengers was the ideal time to launch a new Black Widow book even though prior attempts hadn't worked, as the character is more recognizable than ever before now. But instead we get a Hawkeye series with Marvel claiming he was "the breakout star of the movie"(?). It is fitting that Kate Bishop is stealing the limelight from him in his own book!

As for Jan, Marvel never really tried. Her effervescent personality/unique fashionista superhero hook is the reason she is a good character and has immense potential, it is thanks to the talent in the 70s/80s/90s who maintained her personality and fun appeal. Otherwise if there had been an unimaginative Bendis among the ranks of writers in the earlier decades, Jan would have disappeared into oblivion a long time ago.

ah ha yea that's why I sort of said that Wanda have had character developement in spades but she is still have an unknown personality. At least Jan has the same personality that we love, even though far less things happened to her.

Now, now don't go on bad mouthing Clint! I don't think it would make any differences. Widow is too much of a grounded character to really break out. Could a solo title again would have brought the movie audience when people were not interested before? It has never been proven that a hit movie results in comic sales. The only time that worked was after the 1989 Batman movie, maybe?

I would buy a Janet book but what do you think Marvel should have done with her? Make her the lead in Avengers Spotlight? I mean it doesn't scream big seller. Hell I would buy a Wasp book because i'm a grown up now and will accept any type of genres but I can't imagine say when I was 20 years old buying a Wasp book.
