    Default Steel

I don't know much about this character except that I love the design of him and his back story sounds interesting. So are there any must read Steel stories? Is the series from the 90's worth getting?

Unfortunately there aren't many must read Steel stories, no.

Opinions vary on the 90s series; everyone agrees that the earlier run was abysmal, but the Priest/Cowen run seems to be well liked. I thought it was only slightly less mediocre than what came before it, to be perfectly frank.

Many considered his role in "52" to be THE definitive Steel story. I thought it was meandering and unsatisfying.

My personal favorite "Steel" stuff has all involved him as a supporting character; I loved him in JLA, under Morrison. I loved him in the much maligned "Infinity inc" series by Peter Milligan, and still consider that to be one of the most impressively subtle representations of 'genius' that I've ever seen in comics. Milligan really is the master. His role in Joe Kelly/Mark schultz's Action Comics/Adventures of Superman stuff.

His recent stuff in Action Comics, and the Action comics Annual (out last week) has been pretty okay, but nothing great.

I've long wanted them to do something significant and exciting with the character. It seems like every day some new idea comes to me that would be great for Steel. I really think the possibilities are endless.

Not really comic related but he had really good appearances in Superman the animated series.

Outside of that the Schultz run of Man of Steel (which had Steel) was pretty good and the Louise Simonson/Jon Bogdanove stuff was pretty enjoyable.

If you want to read up on Steel you should start with the original "Death of Superman" (Doomsday vs Superman) arc. Than read the "Reign of Superman arc comics where John Henry Irons makes his debut as Steel.

You can read the Steel series if you like I thought it was okay. Christopher Priest's run is underrated imo.

Definitely read Morrison's run on JLA, he does a good job with Steel as a supporting character. Other than that the 52 series (not to be confused with the new 52) following Infinite Crisis, had an okay Steel centric story arc dealing with Lex Luthor and his niece Natasha among others. And he appears sporadically in Superman related comics and events over the years.

Avoid the SHAQ movie from the 90's trust me just avoid it at all costs. Check out Superman TAS cartoon, specifically the episodes Prototype and Heavy Metal. Overall Bruce Timm does a solid job of defining the core elements of Irons character.

He also appears in the Justice League Unlimited cartoon but doesn't do much. All his scenes total about 5 minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=tyKhJ2KfnCI

I'd want someone a bit more forward thinking, myself.

Possibilities; Eric Trautmann, Nick Spencer, Joshua Hale Fialkov, Matt Kindt, Peter Milligan.

And my personal dream, Darwyn Cooke, having written the single best Steel related scene in history...

I really like Priest's run. I find it to be a trial run for the style he perfected on Quantum and Woody and Black Panther (minus the time jumps). Very entertaining, and some serious stuff being addressed under the surface of humor.
