One, I think it is hard to tell until you see it in person. The Gold books for example look very yellow in pics, but are legit gold in person.

Two, the Blackout is also an homage to the Solar #10 black cover. So there's some nostalgia there.

Exactly, it's an homage to Solar #10, has to be.
I'm not really a variant guy, that's to say I don't go out of my way nor pay crazy money for them but that's one I'd like to get at a fair price.

It's a 1:1 variant, so you should be able to get it at cover. Pullbox just means if the retailer orders it, they get it. Most get an equal amount of the regular and pullbox covers.

Thank you for pointing this out. Also, the black-out variant was the first image Valiant sent out to tease fans about Shadowman's return. It feels appropriate that that image should be a variant cover.

Just an aside, but Solar #10 was probably the most sought after single issue of the 90s. All pre-Unity books were highly collectible, but that book was #1 on the Wizard Top 10 forever. Partly it was the gimmick cover, but it was also the first appearance of Gilad the Eternal Warrior and the Geomancer. I found one once, signed by Don Perlin (I think) and the guy wanted $500 for it.

Like in the film world (my forte) the majors dominate - but some incredibly good stories get made by the indies.

That's why I like forums such as these, where the indie writers/artists/pubs can be discussed. It enhances any tech-savvy marketing approach the 'underdogs' might have.
