I realize they have to publish this book to cover the costs of its production, but I think it was too late in the wake of Waids reframing of the DD franchise.
Much is said of Waid pulling DD out of Frank Millers shadow and the whole gritty Noir thing, and breathing new life into it, so this book is a book out of time now. Unless it has a meta reference to the way that the Noir had killed DD.
Perhaps it should have been put out under the MAX line to give it some continuity distance.

After about 30 years of noirish Daredevil, a brief run by Mark Waid really won't cut it to "reframe the franchise."
Thenext writers is going to dive straight back into noir tropes.

Seeing
Frank Castle
in the electric chair in the preview pages makes me nervous. I like it when these "The End" stories are restricted to JUST the main character and don't worry too much about what's happening to the rest of the Marvel Universe. I thought that was one of the drawbacks of Fantastic Four: The End--too much showcasing of the futures of the Avengers, Hulk, Spider-Man, and others.

Also, I have no idea what "Mapone" is--which I guess is the point. Still, I'm hoping it doesn't turn out to be lame.

I might get issue 3 just to see if Elektra really bites it in this bleak, DD-less future. I do have to say I like the cover for it.

Perhaps the next writer should try to balance noir and light hearted moments. Miller's original run had light hearted moments mixed in with the darkness. Also DD needs another Born Again style event like he needs a hole in the head, so avoiding those are a must.

Born Again wasn't an event, nor was it what set him on the noir path.

Miller's original run had noir elements, as well as light hearted elements and whether Born Again is an event or merely an occurrence is besides the point. Writers having trying to recreate Born Again so often in DD that it has become a cliche, the point that roughly every 5 years someone or something comes along and destroys DD's life. The DD title seems to stuck in a permanent loop. Born Again was a great story, but later writers trying to copy has become a milestone around the DD franchise.

"This will be monthly for all eight issues. Klaus is working on issues five and six right now. So barring the Eastern Seaboard falling in the ocean, this will not be hit with delays," Wacker stated.

Light-hearted elements are not exactly incompatible with noir...

That's my point, I think some writers take the darkness in DD too far and the title just becomes depressing. DD can be noir, but still have light hearted moments that break up the dark atmosphere.

It's so tempting to get this. I keep flicking through it whenever I go to buy comics and I love DD. It's just, I dunno, the cover price and me trying to buy less that's putting me off.
Avengers Arena is one of the best books in the shops right now, it's seriously amazing.

Get it. If you enjoyed the Bendis/Brubaker run (and therefore Miller as well) then this quenches that thirst. Waid's DD is awesome but it is nice to get back and enjoy the grit too.
