Default Azzarello Looks to New Gods, Old Material in "Wonder Woman" & "Before Watchmen"

Always a pleasure to hear from Azz.

I think Wonder Woman is the best book DC's publishing right now. Just really fantastic stuff. The longer Azz, Chiang and Akins are left to do what they wanna do with the title, the better. I just hope they aren't forced to acknowledge the Diana/Superman "relationship."

Well, I know I certainly wouldn't want to meet him.

I wasn't a fan of Wonder Woman so I was able to look at that thing with the whole mythos that she was in with a more critical eye, and there wasn't something in Wonder Woman that I was feeling precious about, you know?
It's time to get this fellow off of Wonder Woman and put somebody who respects the character and her mythos on the title.

I will not subscribe to DC comics while he is still on the payroll. If another company starts publishing his material I will cancel my pulls from them as well. His treatment of Wonder Woman is bad enough; his treatment of Jacqueline Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe is utterly unforgivable.

Meanwhile a legion of us will be buying the book because it is, for the first time in all the time I've been reading comics, one of the best books being published by DC, Marvel or Image.

This is, without a doubt, the creative high point for the character, and I say that as someone who has tried to get into every post-crisis iteration of the character from Perez to JMS and everyone in between. Only Rucka could even be considered 'good', and his run wasn't a spot on this.

Azz is great, loving him on Wonder Woman. First time she's felt relevant in years. The Before Watchmen stuff doesn't hold any interest for me, but I'll give whatever else he's working on a try.
Be a fan of the creators, not the characters.

I totally agree. In all my years of collecting comics I've never enjoyed Wonder Woman this much. It's easily one of the best books every month.

I think Azz's point about not being too much of a fan is relevant. You start to play favorites because you love the mythos so much that you zero in on the details and miss the big points that make the character work.

The outsider perspective is exactly what Wonder Woman needed. She's always been a character the majority of fandom just doesn't "get." That's why Gail Simone's run was so mediocre.

Yeah, let's take the guy that is writing the critically acclaimed, best selling run the character had for a really long time off the book. What the hell is wrong with you, DC?

I don't want to dogpile, but I will add I've never been a fan of the character (she seemed like a slightly more interesting female version of Superman but without the plethora of titles that would occasionally pump out some decent stories) and it's my second favorite DC title and in my top 5 for sure (All-Star Western is my #1 DC title). I love the art, I love the story, I love most of all that it doesn't seem to be tied to the rest of the DCU (something it has in common with All-Star Western). I know this can't last, but until it's gone I'm going to enjoy this title. I get the flak he got for some questionable story decisions, but the same was said about Catwoman and Red Hood and for the most part I've enjoyed those titles as well.

I'm looking forward to another amazing year of Wonder Woman. I could not be happier with how the first year turned out. Without a doubt, this is my favorite DC book by a wide margin. the only other book I was enjoying as much was Journey into Mystery, and that's over now.

Wow ... you certainly have a one-sided vendetta going on there.
