Interesting comments. But, for me, what's good about AvX is that it is a good place to get off. This "event" was just as disappointing as most of the others, but far more badly written and illogical. Enough. For so much money, I expect better quality from my comics. I'm going to use this opportunity to pare down what I get from Marvel to the bare minimum.

Hate to break it to the author of this really solid post, but there already is another big event planned for next year. It's called the Ultron Wars. It was supposed to happen sooner, but Marvel decided to squeeze AvX in first. Personally, I would prefer the Ultron Wars. I'm not opposed to a big event changing the status quo of the comics. I'm just opposed to doing so in a way that lacks details and makes so little sense that it gives the impression that Marvel stopped caring along the way.

Once again, I have a sneaky suspicion, Marvel will once again dodge the reboot bullet that DC keeps shooting itself in the foot with. They can move in a new direction line wide and while not discarding all that came before.. that's really how you should do it... One year in to the start from scratch take of the New 52 and it's obvious they've created just as many continuity holes as Post Crisis continuity did. Superman didn't need yet another revamp with body armor (especially after Johns and Frank had just done defining work in Action with Legion and Brainiac AND a retold origin..) so much as he and the rest of the line needed a modernized direction.. Virtually all of the backbone of the New 52 regarding government mistrust/friction and a less than adoring public could have been easily accomplished as a natural response/result of any of the last Crisis/Flashpoints that have occurred... Much like Marvel is doing with AvX. It's so unnecessary to tie DC's hands behind their own backs like they do.. All that said, I'm not a very big fan of a lot of the direction Bendis took Marvel in the last 8 years... And I can't say I'm jazzed that the guy who created the circumstances that ruined a hero like Cyclops by turning him from the champion of Xavier's dream to its nightmare.. And then killed/martyred Xavier.. rather than have him step up again.. is now going to run the X Line, capitalizing on that juxtaposition as more story fodder.. But Marvel NOW has me more excited than 'nervous.' While the New 52 still makes me hesitant about its direction long term.

Nice conclusion. I instantly though of Remender's run on Uncanny X-Force as an example of good writing working without touching on an event at all. I'm sure Marvel is annoyed they can't cross pollinate with X-Force stories, but it's refreshing to know the comic you're reading doesn't require you to read 3 other books to figure out the whole picture. Typically that leads to comics feel stale or stories feeling forced. I felt as much with AvX #12. Much too heavy handed and sloppy to be considered a great read.

I haven't read it. I realised with Fear Itself that you know what happens from reading tie-ins. So I stuck to my regular series. I'm excited by Marvel Now. I couldn't care less whether Marvel Now stems (it doesn't) from AvX.

Good article. I too, when read about a Marvel Now, lost interest in AvX. Definitely it was announced too early. I wonder what will be the event in next year?

Age of Ultron will likely be a self-contained mini-series.

That's not to say there won't be a DIFFERENT event next year.
