    Spike-X has a common reaction:

I tried reading Avengers Forever tonight. Got through two issues before I gave up.

I'm usually a big fan of that particular writer (whose name I won't mention), but this one really didn't do it for me.
I loved it, but then I'm a die-hard Avengers nut...the target audience. It's a pretty work, but it has limited appeal outside its geek zone.

    Winslow horrifies me:

To those critics that claim the Conan story; The Hour of the Dragon, is Howard's finest work; you are simply dead fucking wrong.

I am having a hard time finishing the thing. Howard is all over the place. I am becoming convinced that short story writers and script writers suck at writing novels.
An added "Huh?" from me to any making that claim. It's just the longest. Heck, I think I remember preferring the de Camp/Carter version in "Conan the Conqueror", but it's been so long since I've read either I don't remember the specifics.

But there's lots better than "Hour". "Tower of the Elephant", "Black Colossus", "Red Nails", "Shadows in Zamboula"...
    'Dox out.

    GozertheGozarian wants the real story:

I have the same problem with The Silmarillion. That book is fucking impossible to read.
I've read it a dozen times and...you're right.

It's a fine book of notes, fragments and background stories. As a narrative? Um, no.

No no.. that wasn't a camping joke, that was a "some people don't have access to water" joke, because thirsty people are hilarious!

"The Scarlett Citadel" is a short story that has the same plot as "The Hour of the Dragon" (more or less). It's tons better.

The problem with my son and camping is that he had a fearless desire to climb. He would climb rocks and get into precarious situations all the time. Now he can rappel down rock faces without fear so its working for him.

    Morning people.
What have I always believed? That, on the whole, and by and large, if a person lived properly, not according to what any priests said, but according to what seemed decent and honest inside, then it would, at the end, more or less, turn out ok.

Tried to go to work today. Was told not to while waiting in the 1/4 mile long line for the shuttle bus to Manhattan.

Yup. Sounds like my little terror. He climbs everything in an attempt to keep up with his older brother.

Yay! Getting up early for no reason is great fun. You should never have listened to those assholes who told you it would be a good idea to work this weekend.

Fine here, my free time now means more college football to watch and this weekend is Hallmark Channel Xmas movie marathon. Which means that I both can watch all I want and that I need to get a life.

What a nightmare. Any word on when the PATH trains will be up and running?

Decatur, Illinois? My parents lived there '57-'60 or so.
