I get that they want to use new characters.

But with 5 central characters, couldn't they have at least ONE be an existing comic book S.H.I.E.L.D. agent?

Are the antagonists also going to be 'new characters'? I hope Whedon didn't just re-badge some idea he had kicking around just to push it through.

This. Although it would be very easy to add some backstory which is obviously from, say...Daisy/Quake or another well-known agent like Clay Quartermain. I also agree with Atomiq....please don't let this be some idea he just had on his desk somewhere.

My first reaction is: I hope this is fake. Because the names and descriptions aren't selling me just yet.

Sounds like the last two are meant to be reminiscent of the characters from Item 47. Two agents who came onboard and went through training together, and one has a gift for weaponry. They just made the female character more than just a tag-along, giving her scientific cred as well.

If this series ends up being as good as Whedon's past shows, I really hope that it will last beyond it's 2nd year.

Well.......I dont like those names, but sure, still likely going to be good.

As with other posters though, would have been nice to have had at least one 'known' character as a main cast member.

I was hoping for Clay Quartermain..... I loved the Peter David Hulk run with this participation. Maybe a little Val Cooper too.

I'm happy as well that we are getting all new characters and I hope fresh new faces. Looking forward to this!

I haven't been disappointed by Whedon yet. Sure the character descriptions look a little iffy in writing but I'm sure it'll pull through when it's on camera.

Yeah, my enthusiasm for this project just dropped considerably. I still have hope it will be good, but at least one or two familiar names would have gone a long way. I doubt this is just "something Joss had on his desk" retweaked into SHIELD, but they really ought to have some actual comic book characters and elements in their comic-based TV show.

I also would've liked to have seen a Quartermain or a Sitwell in there.

But, to be fair guys, it wouldn't be that hard to change the names between this initial "ideas" stage and actual production.
They're just names written on a piece of paper. And on the flip side, who's to say these five characters won't end up in the comics like "Cheese" did? If the show is popular, maybe viewers will follow the TV counterparts back into the comics? I'm sure Marvel is looking at it from that angle. If the show does well, there'll be plenty of opportunity to salt in 'Veteran' SHIELD Agents down the road.
I believe all that needs to be said has been. So here’s my two cents.”-- ScottMC, inadvertently summing up the Internet.

These are just character descriptions, basic starting points for the characters. It does not preclude them changing, either before production starts or once filming is under way. The best ideas evolve and grow as you nurture them. And while there are five core characters they are looking for, this may be just the list of new characters, but not the full list of characters used on the show. We may see some other characters emerge that are tried and true known Shield agents. Don't write it off yet just because of preliminary ideas that may or may not have been intended to be released to the public for general consumption.
