"Kick-Ass" creator Mark Millar has signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to serve as creative consultant on its X-Men and Fantastic Four films.

    What an incredibly odd choice...

I actually don't like this development. I've read a lot of Mark Millar's work from Ultimate and Wolverine. And I think he doesn't have a good handle on the characters. Pretty much every character he writes turns into an asshole. I'd rather not see that in X-men or Fantastic Four movies. I don't want the characters to be edgy for the sake of being edgy. Millar is great with stuff like Kick-Ass, but when he wrote Ultimate X-men he actually admitted he didn't know much about the characters. So why would he be a consultant on the movies? I think it's a bad choice for a couple of franchies that can ill-afford to make them.

He didn't have to know a single thing about the characters. He was the first guy to ever write them. He basically created the Ultimate Men and Fantastic Four.

And those, and Ultimates vols. 1 & 2 were probably the last good works he ever wrote.
'The marquis. Well, you know, to be honest, he seems a little bit dodgy to me.'
'Mm,' she agreed. 'He's a little bit dodgy in the same way that rats are a little bit covered in fur."

Given that the Marvel movies are all playing off The Ultimates & The Ultimates 2, it really isn't.

I never liked the take on the FF as younger characters. But I see this as potentially a good thing. If a choosen consultant cannot turn out a killer FF film, then maybe, just maybe the rights will eventually revert back to Marvel, and then they can do it right.

Not "all"; I'd say Thor owes a LOT more to 616 Thor than Ultimate modern Scandi treehugger Thor, for instance.

    Definitely an interesting choice.

What surprised me is that Fox stated they had a "shared Marvel Universe" in the official press release. Here is the quote:

Commented TCF production president Emma Watts: “We are excited to be working with Mark. In addition to his groundbreaking Marvel work, he is simply one of the most original voices in comics today and will be an invaluable resource to us and to our filmmakers as we look for fresh opportunities to innovate within our shared Marvel universe.”

Fox might be taking the Marvel approach with their future movies. This move seems to indicate so.

Josh Trank gave us, in my opinion, one of the greatest superhero movies of the last decade with Chronicle.

Not really. Millar's been doing quite a few rounds in Hollywood between Wanted (1 & reportedly 2), Kick-Ass (1 &2) and Nemesis. How many comic book creators can say they've had that kind of success? And that's multiple independent properties. Whether the guy knows all of the right people or he knows how to make an outstanding pitch, Millar gets films made.

If anything, his hand should at least ensure some decent action.
Why aren't you reading Winter Soldier? You should be!

Not sure that really makes sense. There isn't that much overlap between the X-franchise and Fantastic Four.

They better not make X-Men anything like his Ultimate versions.

    Blerg.

Millar has had a few good comics, but, by and large, I tend to really dislike his work. Hopefully he doesn't get too much input on future X-Movies...
