One thing I can't get the hang of is how did Molly become the Winter Lady? Based on the Summer knight book, the mantle of power is supposed to go to the nearest Fae. Am I wrong because I could be but thats what I remeber the Mothers saying.

In Summer Knight, Lily said the power went to the nearest Summer Vessel and she only received it because she had had the Knight's Mantle at the time.

It goes beyond that, though. I mean, the implication is that Mab and the Leanansidhe had been priming Molly to be a vessel for Winter as a part of their agenda from the start. Again going by the Summer Knight text, it wouldn't have been unusual for Maeve's power to go back to Mab for future dispersal but it went to Molly as Mab intended Molly to be the recipient of Winter's power in some form at some point potentially.

It is the springboard for most of what happens afterwards. Even with Molly, that was foreshadowed when Lea 'suggested' that Michael trade his oldest daughter for the sword.
